Map of Hockenheim

background

Hockenheim was first mentioned in a document in 769. The place belonged to the diocese of Speyer for a long time, became part of the Electoral Palatinate in 1462 and became Baden after its dissolution in 1803. In 1895 Hockenheim was granted city rights and has held the title since 2001 Great county seat.

The city is located in the immediate vicinity of the Old Rhine. In the past, hops were grown on the sandy soil, and tobacco cultivation and the cigar industry played an important role until the middle of the 20th century. Today the cultivation of asparagus is the most important special crop, the city lies on the Baden Asparagus Route.

Hockenheim is known nationwide primarily for its racetrack Hockenheimring. But the first automobile overland trip also went through Hockenheim, it is due to the route of the Bertha Benz Memorial Route.
