The territory of the state extends on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. The archaeological site of Mrauk U constitutes its main attraction, plus numerous beaches and tropical islands among which the best known is that of Ngapali Beach.
The state borders on the north Chin state, to the east with the regions of Magway, Bago, Ayeyarwady and finally to the northwest with the Bangladesh (precisely with the Chittagong Division). The state is between latitudes 17 ° 30 '(north) and 21 ° 30' (north) and between longitudes 92 ° 10 'and 94 ° 50' east.
The Arakan Yoma mountain range, which reaches 3,063 m of Mount Victoria, separates the state of Rakhine from the rest of Burma. The area is 36,762 km² and its capital is Sittwe (formerly Akyab). Its population is 2,698,000 according to the 1985 census. There are two main ethnic groups, the Rakhine and the Rohingyas. Other minor groups are the Mro, the Khami (Khumi), the Kaman (Muslims), the Dienet, the Marmagri and a few others. Buddhism is the most widespread religion followed by the Muslim one.
