South Asia - Sul da Ásia

O South Asia it comprises the countries that lie between the Himalayan mountain range and the Indian Ocean (from north to south) and between the valleys of the Ganges and Indus rivers (from east to west). The Indian Ocean coastline in the region runs from the Arabian Sea (in the west) to the Bay of Bengal (in the east). The huge triangular-shaped territory of the South Asia is also known as Indian Subcontinent.

Understand

The displacement of the Indian Subcontinent's tectonic plate towards the north and its collision with the Asian plate caused the formation of the Himalayan mountain range, where the largest mountains on the planet are located, which are also the northern limit of the South Asia region.

Apart from the Himalayas, the climate is tropical, with summer monsoons and dry winters. Monsoons do not have a regular distribution in the region, going from almost non-existent in the west of the Pakistan to six months in the south of the India; at the Sri Lanka, they take place twice a year, in May and October/November.

The influence of Indian culture can be seen throughout the region. Both Hinduism and Buddhism had their origins in South Asia. Islam was introduced in the seventh century and was widespread during the Mughal empire.

The region is one of the most densely populated on the planet, with approximately 1.6 billion inhabitants, equivalent to a quarter of the world's population, with a density seven times greater than the average of all countries combined.

The breakup of South Asia in a number of countries is due to the invasion and domination of the British Empire, which divided the region according to its own interests and which caused the formation of different countries with the independence of India in 1947.
