Szydłów is a historical place in Poland in the voivodeship Holy Cross. The place is in Heiligkreuzgebirge and is known for its old town with very well-preserved medieval city walls. The city is on the Via Jagiellonica.
background
The royal town was first mentioned in 1191 and received city rights in 1329. Around 1350 the Gothic royal castle, the city wall and the city gates were built and the city rose to become an important center of handicrafts and trade. In particular, fermentation and cloth manufacture flourished. Many Jews also settled in the village and built a large Renaissance synagogue in the 16th century. During the Reformation, Calvinists and Polish Brothers worked here. The wars of the 17th century, however, stopped the development of the place permanently, so that it was able to retain its late medieval character. After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, the place came successively to the Habsburgs, the Duchy of Warsaw and finally to Congress Poland, which was part of the Russian Empire. After the First World War it became part of the Polish Republic. In 1944 and 1945 90% of the buildings were destroyed. The parish church was rebuilt by 1948. The synagogue was rebuilt between 1978 and 1981.
