The leads from west to east A 4 Frankfurt – Dresden through the Thuringian heartland. At Erfurt meets her with the A 71 on a north-south motorway that has been completely rebuilt in recent years.

Of Gotha from leads the 21.7 km long Thuringian Forest Railway to the north edge of the Thuringian Forest. This is line 4 of the Gotha tram. The Thuringian Forest Railway has been in operation since 1929 and begins on the forecourt of Gotha train station. The driving time after Bad Tabarz, the end point of the route, is 55 minutes, a single ticket costs € 3.60.
The Thuringian heartland is covered by the tariff area of the Verkehrsverbund Mittelthüringen (VMT) covered. Association tickets are therefore also valid in city buses and trams, as is the Saxony (Saxony-Anhalt / Thuringia) ticket.
The German toy route runs through the area.

- Arnstadt
- Three of a kind (congregation) - Everyone who drives on the A4 knows these three castles northwest of Arnstadt: in the north the legendary Gleichen Castle, opposite the motorway the Mühlburg and southeast of it the Wachsenburg.
- The former Buchenwald concentration camp including the memorial on the Ettersberg near Weimar.
- The baroque Molsdorf Castle near Erfurt, in the immediate vicinity of the Erfurt motorway junction.
