To know

Geographical notes

Torre Annunziata is located in an inlet of the Gulf of Naples, at the foot of the Vesuvius. The city has developed mainly along the coastal strip, on a totally flat territory, for a length of about six kilometers, between Chief Oncino and it Rock of Rovigliano. Internally it expands for less than a kilometer. It enjoys a Mediterranean climate, is very ventilated by sea currents and is well protected by the Vesuvius massif from the cold winds that come from the Campania hinterland. From the panoramic via Gino Alfani, it is possible to admire the scenery of the Sorrento peninsula, as well asisland of Capri, located just in front of the Torrese coast.

When to go

Thanks to its mild climate, the city can be visited at any time of the year. The ideal period for a visit to the 'Archaeological excavations of Oplonti, it is in spring or autumn.

Equipped with an immense sandy beach (volcanic sand), in the summer it is possible to go to one of the many bathing establishments in Viale Marconi, where it is also possible to take advantage of the Vesuvian Baths. If you want to feel an integral part of the Torrese citizenship, the most suitable day to visit it is 22 October, the day in which the votive festival dedicated to the Madonna della Neve, venerated patron saint of the city, is celebrated. The procession starts from the Pontifical Basilica and crosses the long street of the city, where a cheering crowd rushes. Linked to this event is the patronal feast of August 5, with historical re-enactment of the discovery of the Madonna della Neve at sea.

Events and parties

Madonna of the Snow
  • Patronal feast of the "Madonna della Neve". Simple icon time.svg5th August. Re-enactment of the discovery of the sacred image of the Madonna della Neve. Legend has it that on 5 August 1354, fishermen from Torre Annunziata intent on fishing in the vicinity of the Scoglio di Rovigliano, on the border with Castellammare di Stabia, hoisting the nets they found entangled in a chest containing a terracotta bust, representing a Dark-skinned Madonna holding the Christ child in her arms, without any identifying inscriptions. A quarrel arose with the fishermen from stabia, who claimed it because according to them the box was fished in stabiesi waters, but a magistrate of the time, who intervened to redeem the dispute, agreed with the oplontine fishermen. This episode is recalled annually on the beach of the discovery in the presence of the authorities and many faithful.
  • Votive festival of the "Madonna della Neve". Simple icon time.svgOctober 22. Several miracles have been attributed to the Madonna della Neve of Torre Annunziata over the centuries. Popular legends tell that it stopped pirate raids and looting the city in 500 and 600, put an end to the petechial fever of 1817 and the cholera epidemics of 1836 and 1837. Some miracles are linked to the eruptions of Vesuvius. The most famous is from 22 October 1822: Torre Annunziata was obscured by a dense cloud of ash and lapilli, while the lava was heading towards the city. The faithful carried the Madonna della Neve in procession. Suddenly a ray of sunlight penetrated the volcanic blanket and illuminated the effigy of the Madonna and the lava stopped. Since then, the votive festival has been celebrated during which stalls, rides, festivals, fairs, lights and fireworks are set up for days, in addition to the procession.
