Varel is a city in Friesland, located at the southern end of the Jadebusen, and connected to it by the Vareler Tief, which leads far into the interior and at the end forms the Vareler Hafen. The most famous district of Varel is next to the city of Varel, the North Sea resort of Dangast on the Jade Bay.

Varel was first mentioned in 1123 as the Meierhof "Farle". The exact origin of the name Varel is not known. The first settlement finds are burial mounds and finds along the East Frisian Heerstraße in the Altjührden-Seghorn area (around 3000–2000 BC) as well as an urn cemetery in Borgstede, Jeringhave and Bramloge as well as a boardwalk between Büppel and Jethausen (around 2000–750 BC) . In the middle of the 15th century, Varel, which previously belonged to the Frisian tribal area and was last ruled by chiefs, came under the influence of the Oldenburg Counts' House. After the end of the French occupation in 1813, the imperial counts' rule Varel was rebuilt and now again formed part of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg as the Amt of Varel. On May 1, 1858, the municipality of Varel was granted the status of an official city (first order city). After the occupation without a fight on May 6, 1945 by units of the 2nd Canadian Army, Varel belonged to the British zone of occupation and from November 1946 to the newly formed state of Lower Saxony. Varel was temporarily the seat of the British district military government for the district of Friesland.
In the years 1955 to 1958 the sluice gate was built in Dangast, thus ensuring drainage far into East Frisia. In 1972 both Varel municipalities were united to form today's municipality of Varel. The windmill was repaired during these years and expanded as part of the local history museum. It is still fully functional. In the second half of the 1970s, the seawater spring bath was built in Dangast and the Deichhörn health resort was built. The pedestrian zone was laid out in the city center. In 1977 the new chamber lock at Vareler Hafen (Wilhelm-Kammann-Schleuse) and the new Vareler Siel were put into operation. Varel has been an independent town since 1986 and now has 21 districts.
The Varel harbor with the Wilhelm Kammann lock is the connection across the Jade Bay to the North Sea. In the port area, traces of the once Danish Christiansburg can still be found with the ramparts and moats (site plan at the port).
The one located about 7 km to the north North Sea Dangast is a district of Varel and offers the only free beach on the German North Sea coast. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, the place attracted many artists who used the special lighting conditions as inspiration. So in 1907 not only Max Pechstein but also the Brücke painters Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rotluff came. Many of her pictures show motifs from Dangast and around. Even today one feels particularly committed to artists, which is evident from the numerous art objects and a special open atmosphere that can be found in the village. In 1983, the state of Lower Saxony recognized the district of Dangast as a North Sea resort and a place with a mineral spring spa. Tourism is very important in Dangast. Everyone gets their money's worth here, spa guests, families with children, bikers, couples, bathers ... The real reason for the journey for many tourists and those looking for relaxation is simply the old spa house and the freshly baked cake there almost every minute.

The granite masonry church, now a listed building, was built in the Middle Ages at the highest point in the city instead of a small wooden structure. The oldest part is the nave built in the 12th century from irregularly hewn boulders. It became part of the palace complex after 1650. The castle buildings were demolished around 1870 after an extensive fire. Inside and from the east you can still see the two tower stumps in which the five church bells are ringing. From 1992 the structure and interior were gradually restored. The organ was built in 1978 by the Berlin organ builder Karl Schuke. The case was taken from the previous instrument, a two-manual organ that was built in 1861 by the organ builder Philipp Furtwängler. Typical of a Baptist sacred building is the cloakroom, which is also located in the anteroom of the Friedenskirche. Today's organ comes from Alfred Führer’s workshop in Wilhelmshaven.

The Varel windmill (built in 1847/1848) is a Dutch gallery with a typical three-part structure made of stone, here five-storey substructure, the wooden structure of the "octagon" and the cap with the wings. Due to its dimensions, the Vareler windmill is the second highest mill in Germany and one of the largest gallery Dutch ever. The mill was still in full operation until 1965. The orphanage, a national monument since 1996, was completed in 1671. The brick building, which was built with Dutch influence in the transitional style of Renaissance and Baroque, owes its creation to a foundation of Count Anton I von Aldenburg in 1669. Today the orphanage is a children's home for curative education. In 1980 three new houses for the children were built on the home grounds. After extensive renovation work, the historic building looks splendid again today.
- 8 Varel water tower, Oldenburger Str. 62, 26316 Varel. The water tower, built in 1913/14, is about 50 meters away from the road. With its height of 50.5 meters, it is one of the city's landmarks. From the viewing platform at a height of 41.5 meters, there is a view of the Jade Bay and the villages of the Frisian Wehde, and now and then of Butjadingen. - 9 Hansa works, Neumühlenstraße / corner of Hansastraße, 26316 Varel. The Hansa factory in Varel was a factory for industrial automobile production for the Hansa automobile works and the largest automobile factory in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. The building complex on the corner of Neumühlenstrasse and Hansastrasse was used between 1911 and 1930. A listed part of the complex is still preserved today. The semicircular, four-storey building in functional Art Nouveau is one of the earliest German industrial buildings. In 1930 the Hansa factory was closed. In total, more than 10,000 automobiles were built in Varel.

The district court, opposite the castle church on the site of the former pleasure garden, is one of the oldest buildings in Varel. The building was planned in 1869 in the neo-Gothic style. Today the facade is listed and only the interior has been renovated. Despite vehement resistance from the population, the large, historic meeting room inside the district court was reduced in size. The neo-Gothic building, designed by the Oldenburg court architect Klingenberg, was the model for a number of larger buildings in Varel, including the old Catholic church and the hospital. The Germaniadenkmal commemorates those who fell in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71.
- Varel train station, Am Bahnhof 1, 26316 Varel. Varel station (built in 1867) is the only remaining station building from the opening time of the Oldenburg – Wilhelmshaven railway line. As part of the double-track expansion of the line, the station was fundamentally rebuilt in 2012. The entire ensemble with the station building, transition to the central platform and goods shed is now a listed building. The goods shed is still to the north of the reception building, and since the renovation in 2012 it no longer has a siding. Franz Radziwill House

At the Sielstrasse was in the house of the painter w: Franz Radziwill, who lived there from 1923 until his death in 1983, set up an art museum. Annually changing exhibitions have been held in the rooms since 1987, equipped with loans from private collections and museums. After Franz Radziwill acquired a small fisherman's house in Dangast in 1923, he built it up to its present size in several stages as a trained bricklayer with his own architectural designs. This makes it one of the few artist houses that has been preserved in its original state, but in a certain sense also a "masonry autobiography". Radziwill collected Frisian tiles for the kitchen walls, and he also designed and painted the furniture himself in consultation with his wife Anna Inge. - In the area of the Varel harbor Traces of the old Christian castle, which was built in the 17th century by the Danish king Christian V, can still be found today. A site plan shows the old ramparts and moats. In 1733 a sewer was built, the section of which in front of the dike was designed as a landing stage for ships. It was not until the beginning of industrial growth in the middle of the 19th century that the Varel harbor also experienced its heyday. After 1865, with the start of large shipping, the importance of the Varel port declined. Varel only had a certain status as a fishing port. The lock, built in 1846, no longer met the requirements of shipping. 1977 became the new 16 Wilhelm Kamman lock opened. There you can watch the incoming and outgoing ship traffic very nicely. Despite the many changes over time, the romance has remained. Today the port is a colorful mixture of berths for private pleasure boats, home port of individual fishing trawlers, a location for businesses and a tourist attraction. - The 20 Varel forest in the south-east of the city is a popular local recreation area and offers its advantages in every season, from shady, cool spots in summer to tobogganing in the "sand pit" in winter. To the 21 "Stone pillars" is not only the entrance to the Varel Forest, but also the start and finish point of the "Jungeholz Forest Experience Trail", which meanders through the forest for a distance of approx. 2.7 km. DanGastQuellbad in OT-Dangast
Anyone who goes to the coast also wants to swim in the sea. This is even possible free of charge in Dangast. The North Sea resort advertises fence-free, unobstructed and free of entry. On the beautiful sandy beach you can also build sandcastles with the children or hire a captain on the large play ship at the "Wattbuttjer" world natural heritage playground. Colorful beach chairs characterize the picture on the beach and invite you to linger, protected from too much sun and wind. In fact, there are even two beaches in Dangast. However, these are not directly linked to one another. Between the beach to the east, you can get from the new World Heritage Portal via the Rennweide briefly through the village, past the Rennweide campsite, and directly to the second beach at the old Kurhaus. Mudflat hiking
Outside of bathing times, you can go on wonderful mudflat hikes. At low tide, the Wadden Sea extends far over the Jade Bay and invites North Sea holidaymakers to go hiking in the mudflats. The mudflats in the Jade Bay are relatively muddy and sometimes let the mudflat hiker sink into the mud up to over the knee. The dangers in the Wadden Sea are not to be underestimated. It is advisable to undertake a mudflat hike only with an experienced mudflat guide. If you don't like to wade through the mudflats barefoot, you should use snug sneakers with socks. Einen guten Sonnenschutz sollte man aber immer dabei haben. Von April bis Oktober werden begleitete Wattwanderungen angeboten. Es gibt kürzere Watt-Strecken, sowie eine der anspruchsvollsten Führungen an der gesamten Wattenmeerküste - eine etwa 6,5 stündige Wattwanderung zum Leuchtturm Arngast.
To go biking
Das gut ausgebaute Radwegenetz führt z. B. direkt am Deich entlang nach Varel oder Wilhelmshaven oder durch eine abwechslungsreiche Landschaft in kleine friesische Ortschaften, oft fernab viel befahrener Straßen. Es gibt mehrere ausgearbeitete Fahrradrouten mit ganz unterschiedlichen Schwerpunkten. Ein breites Angebot an Radwanderkarten gibt es bei der Tourist info in Dangast. Für sportliche Radfahrer bietet sich sogar eine Umrundung des Jadebusen mit dem Rad an. Die notwendige Schiffahrt von Wilhelmshaven nach Eckwarderhörn bietet dabei eine willkommene Verschnaufpause. Diese Strecke ist aufgrund der Länge (etwa 52 km) besonders für e-Bikes geeignet. Es besteht auch die Möglichkeit, sich vor Ort Fahrräder zu leihen. In Dangast gibt es drei Verleihstationen.
Wandern, Spazierengehen, Walken
Die klare Seeluft bietet sich geradezu zum Wandern an. Ob es kilometerweite Wanderungen am Deich entlang oder in die kleinen landeinwärts gelegenen Orte geht, mag jeder selbst entscheiden. Die Ruhe und die frische Luft werden begeistern. Auch ein Rundkurs von Dangast über den Vareler Hafen am Deich entlang nach Varel und auf dem direkten Weg wieder zum Ausgangspunkt zurück ist möglich. Die Tourist-Info hat für Dangast einige schöne und interessante Spaziergänge ausgearbeitet. Ausgeschilderte Wanderwege im Vareler Forst, Seghorner Forst, Forst Herrenneuen oder Neuenburger Urwald helfen dem Spaziergänger, sich auch hier zurechtzufinden.

Wo viel Wasser ist, ist auch das Angeln beliebt. Für das Angeln im Wattenmeer reicht die Vorlage des Sportfischereischeins und des Personalausweises. I m Dangaster Binnentiefbenötigt man den Sportfischereischein, den Personalausweis und eine Tageskarte.

Wunderschöne Ausrittmöglichkeiten bietet die Umgebung. In den umliegenden Reitställen werden Reitunterricht, Ponyreiten und Kutschfahrten angeboten. Auch gibt es für das eigene Pferd Unterstellmöglichkeiten in verschiedenen Pferdepensionen. An den Badestrand darf der vierbeinige Freund allerdings nicht mitgenommen werden.

Die Akademie Dangast bietet kreativen Menschen Anregungen für das persönliche gestalterische Schaffen. Jedes Jahr während der Saison von April bis Oktober geben qualifizierte DozentInnen sowohl Einheimischen als auch Gästen Kunstkurse. Unter fachkundiger Anleitung bei Tages- und Wochenendkursen in Malerei, textiler Kunst und Fotografie kann man das Gesehene und die Empfindungen unter fachkundiger Anleitung umsetzen. Auch Kunstführungen stehen auf dem Programm.

- Kultur am Haltepunkt Die Wartehalle des Vareler Bahnhofs wird 6-mal im Jahr zum Veranstaltungsraum für Comedy, Musik, Illusion, Kabarett….
- Das traditionelle Vareler Mühlenfest wird wie jedes Jahr am Pfingstwochenende an und in der Windmühle gefeiert.
- Im April veranstaltet die Stadt Varel in der Innenstadt ihr jährliches Frühlingsfest. Die Besucher können sich dabei auf viele Fahrgeschäfte wie z.B. ein historisches Pferdekarussell, den Musik Express und Autoscooter sowie zahlreiche Karussells für die Kinder freuen. Für die Kinder wird es zusätzlich am Samstagnachmittag eine sogenannte „Kindermeile“ in der Drostenstraße geben. Auch das kulinarische Angebot ist sehr vielfältig und lässt keine Wünsche offen.
- Immer Mitte Mai verwandelt sich die Innenstadt in eine Spargel- & Genussmeile. Auf dem Schlossplatz findet parallel dazu der Kreativmarkt statt.
- Im Juli geht es am Strand in Dangast beim Holibeach ganz schön bunt zu.
- The WATT EN SCHLICK FEST findet jeweils drei Tage Anfang August direkt am Weltnaturerbe Wattenmeer in Dangast statt. Auf mehreren Bühnen gibt es einen urbanen Kulturmix aus Musik, Literatur, Film und Theater vom Feinsten. Am Festival-Sonntag wird sich traditionell in einer der dreckigsten Sportarten der Welt gemessen: den Deutschen Meisterschaften im Schlickrutschen.
- Ab Mitte August wird es in Dangast "märchenhaft". The 7 Freilichttheater Dangast präsentiert ein Theaterstück im in der faszinierenden Naturkulisse direkt hinter dem Dangaster Seedeich.
- Parallel zu den Freilichtveranstaltungen wird jeweils ab 18.00 Uhr ein historischer Kunsthandwerkermarkt auf dem Festspielgelände abgehalten.
- Im September findet im erweiterten Innenstadtbereich der Kramermarkt mit großem Markttrubel und einem Zeltprogramm in der Drostenstraße statt. Auch hier gibt es zahlreiche Fahr- und Laufgeschäfte.
- Der Vareler Pferdemarkt findet traditionell am 3. Oktober, dem Tag der deutschen Einheit, auf dem 23 „Schlackenplatz“ in der Windallee statt. Neben dem Auftrieb von Pferden, Fohlen und Ponys stellen sich eine Vielzahl von Händlern, Marktschreiern, Schaustellern und Vareler Gastronomen vor.
- Ebenfalls im Oktober startet das kunterbunte Kürbisfest in der Vareler Innenstadt. In der gesamten Innenstadt gibt es geschmackvolle Angebote wie zum Beispiel Kürbisse in sämtlichen Größen und Variationen, Spezialitäten aus der Pfanne und vom Rost. Außerdem sind viele Kunst- und Hobbyaussteller auf dem Kürbisfest vertreten.
- Mitte Oktober finden in Varel die Zugvogeltage statt. From 24 "Vogelturm" am Vareler Hafen, der nur während der Zugvogeltage steht, hat man einen weiten Blick über den Jadebusen und eine besondere Möglichkeit, Zugvögel im Vorland und Watt zu beobachten. Fachkundige Vogelkundler stehen als "Turmbetreuer" mit hochwertiger Optik täglich von 10.00 bis 18.00 Uhr als Ansprechpartner zur Verfügung. Parallel gibt es in Dangast diverse Veranstaltungen um Thema Zugvögel.
- Während der Adventszeit lockt der Vareler Adventsmarkt in die Innenstadt zum 25 Schlossplatz. Die Besucher erwartet neben den Klassikern auch jede Menge liebevoll gefertigte Weihnachtspräsente, allerlei Handgemachtes und ein abwechslungsreiches musikalisches Programm.

Nicht nur in Varel, sondern an vielen Orten an der Nordseeküste sind Fisch und Granat (Krabben) in besonders guter Qualität, oftmals fangfrisch vom Fischkutter, zu genießen. Beliebt ist Kibbeling, mit Backteig überzogener und dann frittierter Fisch.
Im Winter, nach dem ersten Frost, ist Grünkohl mit Kassler und Pinkel nach einem langen Spaziergang sehr zu empfehlen. Auch Aktivitäten, wie Boßeln, Besenwerfen und Klootschießen gehören zu den winterlichen Vergnügen vor dem gemeinschaftlichen Grünkohlessen.

Leuchtturm Arngast bei Ebbe
- Zum 36,27 m hohen 26 Leuchtturm Arngast mitten im Jadebusen geht es im Rahmen einer etwa 6,5 stündigen, recht anspruchsvollen Wattwanderung ab Dangast. Der Turm kann aber nicht besichtigt werden, er ist verschlossen. Der Leuchtturm ist u. a. auch Ziel einer Schifffahrt mit der MS "Etta von Dangast".
- From Hafen in Dangast aus fährt die "Etta von Dangast" fast täglich auf die Nordsee hinaus. Ausflugsfahrten in den Jadebusen, zu den Seehundbänken oder nach Wilhelmshaven werden ebenfalls angeboten.
