Geographical notes

On the hills ofMolise Apennines in Central Molise, is 12 from Campobasso, 14 from Bojano.

Background

The name of the town derives from the Latin "vincula catenis", or prison with chains. The center was already operational in the year 1000, dependent on the monastery of Santa Maria di Monteverde. In 1349 it was devastated by an earthquake, which involved moving from Monteverde further downstream. The new earthquake of 1805 devastated the town which was rebuilt in Umbertine forms, in particular the neoclassical church of Santa Croce.

What see

  • Monastery of Santa Maria di Monteverde. It is an ancient Benedictine monastery of the eleventh century which collapsed largely due to earthquakes, today a rural church in the municipality of Vinchiaturo.
The church is located at 1000 meters above sea level on the hill called "La Rocca" in Monteverde and is located in a panoramic position as it dominates the valley of Mirabello Sannitico, to the west that of Bojano, to the south that of Sepino and to the north the one towards Campobasso.
In the immediate vicinity of the current church stood the fortified settlement of Ruffirium which had been entrusted with the control of the valley floor and of the ancient communication routes. The presence of numerous traces of megalithic walls, built with irregularly shaped boulders (polygonal walls), which have similarities with the perimeters of other settlements in the Sannio Pentro are a rich testimony.
With the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the following devastation caused by the barbarian invasions, Monteverde fell into desolation. But with the spread of monasticism of the Benedictine order it returned to be inhabited. Historians affirm that in 689 the monk Dauferio, coming from the monastery of San Pietro Avellana he founded near the remains of the ancient Samnite settlement Ruffirium a monastery dedicated to Santa Maria, which in 1022 was transformed into a real monastery run by an abbot. It is believed to be one of the first settlements that arose in Molise, together with those of San Vincenzo al Volturno and Santa Maria di Canneto (near Roccavivara).
In the twelfth century, the convent achieved great notoriety, also thanks to the establishment of a corporation of stone workers operating among theAbruzzo and the Molise.
From the beginning the role of the monastic center was relevant, also thanks to the privileges granted by the ecclesiastical authorities, including the Molise pope Celestino V. In 1321 it was Pope John XXII who financed the embellishment of the church, whose structure appeared to be with three naves , without transept, with apses decorated with elegant splayed mullioned windows and a salient facade, flanked by a bell tower, whose base thanks to the recent consolidation and conservation works carried out in 2008 have brought to light the terracotta floor. The building has two entrances: one on the main elevation and the other on the right side. The processing of the stones, in rows of different heights, is very accurate. Over time, the brambles have hidden part of the ruins, while architectural and decorative fragments such as columns and capitals have been looted. Among the missing finds there were some capitals with leaves and scrolls of good workmanship, which showed a remarkable skill of trade in the executors of the Monteverde corporation.
In 2008, reconnaissance and consolidation work on the remains of the building brought to light the entire plan, the apse with the three single-lancet windows, the bell tower and various burials. The planimetric layout of the church conforms to the Benedictine building schemes. The three naves, in fact, were divided by round arches on columns, except in the vicinity of the presbytery area, where instead pillars were raised connected to each other and to the side walls by transverse arches. Furthermore, in the current rural church built in 1938 with reused material, accessible directly from the ancient church, the beautiful lunette (1.45 m at the base) that decorated the main portal is preserved. The lunette depicts the lamb with its head turned towards the cross, in high relief, while an anchor and a tendril symbolizing the salvation of the soul are the background in bas-relief on the right side. On the left side there is a zigzag pattern, a symbol of light and hope.
In this composition there is the essentiality in the motif of the mystical lamb that emerges on the other allegorical elements, while in other lunettes existing in the Molise churches of the Romanesque period the compositions are more complex and the lamb depicted is confused with other symbols: winged lions , griffins. Therefore it is believed that the lunette of the church of S. Maria di Monteverde, due to the schematism of the forms and the essentiality of the composition, is among the oldest.
The activity of the monastery was interrupted in the mid-fourteenth century, when in 1349 a terrible earthquake destroyed it, leaving however the church and a few houses of shepherds standing. Another earthquake, precisely in 1456, destroyed the few remaining houses. And it is following these events that the church with its dependencies was given in commendation. The survivors of the calamitous event moved to the valley, where two groups of houses of Mirabello Sannitico and Vinchiaturo had already been created for some time. The church, on the other hand, was rebuilt by Cardinal Vincenzo Orsini of Aragon in 1688. For over a century the mass was celebrated by the clergy of Mirabello Sannitico as shown in various notarial deeds. Finally, the terrible earthquake of July 26, 1805 caused the definitive collapse of the church, where the hermit who lived in that place in prayer and contemplation died.
Part of the central apse, traces of the presbytery and the perimeter walls survive of the monastery. : In today's small church, once a year, precisely on the last Sunday of August, mass is celebrated and the statue of the virgin located inside it is carried in procession for a distance of one kilometer. On that day the once "antagonistic" cities of Mirabello and Vinchiaturo (whose boundary the church delineates) gather together to pray, symbolizing brotherhood between peoples. • Church of the Holy Cross. It has a medieval basilica plan with three naves. The facade is from the 15th century, rebuilt after the 1349 earthquake when the town was built further downstream. After the disaster of 1805 the facade was built in neoclassical form in 1840.
The four floors of the octagonal bell tower are impressive, reminiscent of the Apulian Romanesque style. The interior has a 13th century crucifix and an organ from 1775.
