The Hiking Trail on Stromboli is located on the island Stromboli, the northernmost of the Aeolian Islands, in the Italian Province Messina on Sicily.
Info
The Stromboli is a volcano type with tough magma (rock). The gas contained in the magma can only occasionally escape as the magma rises to the top. This often creates blocks and volcanic bombs that are thrown up from the volcano and fall on the environment. In 2002, a German tourist was killed when she was struck by a lump of solidified lava. These types of eruptions also often create lava flows and cinder cones. The Stromboli is a volcano that has been continuously active for the past two thousand years, perhaps longer. Small eruptions are constantly taking place, throwing lava plugs meters high into the air. Most chunks fall back into the crater, but lava also falls into the sea.
Stromboli eruptions are usually small and harmless. The time between two successive eruptions varies from a few minutes to several hours. Every few years, heavier eruptions occur, sometimes causing damage to buildings.
There are three active craters at the top of the volcano. Along the northwestern side of the island there is a wide lava field (Sciara del Fuoco called), along which lava blocks regularly roll down. This volcano belongs to the group of tefra volcanoes. Climbing this volcano is a unforgettable experience!
The description of this walking route is about the most walked route from the place Stromboli. However, you can also from Ginostra do the climb, but it is steeper and heavier.

To the start
Look at "Arrive" from the article Stromboli how to get to the island. For this walking route, the central square is Piazza San Vincenzo the landmark. For organized excursions led by a guide, this square is also usually the starting and meeting point.
Route
The tour starts on the Piazza San Vincenzo, the meeting place of the Strombolians, not far away (about 350 m) from Scari, the port of Stromboli. From Piazza San Vincenzo, walk towards Ficogrande, Via Vittorio Emanuele III and Via Avvocato Domenico Cincotta to the Punta Frontone, from there on to Punta Labronzo, also called the observatory (INGV), the route leads through a plateau marked by immense reed, the reed is used as a windbreak. You are now at an altitude of about 300 m. Via about fifteen hairpin bends you arrive at an altitude of 300 m, the stone path slowly disappears into an unpaved path that has been damaged by the rain over the years. Via a strong slope you arrive at an altitude of about 550 m with the Sciara del Fuoco (lava street). As a continuation, follow the path that leads to the crater. Going forward, the path (basically of volcanic dust) that gets less steep until you get to the point Pizzo Sopra La Fossa (912 m), where you can admire the volcanic eruptions with spectacular explosions, which repeat every 20 to 30 minutes. Once or twice every five years, there are such eruptions of the volcano that the inhabitants of the island had to be evacuated to the neighboring panarea. A sign warns that the rim along the crater is very dangerous, and it is also advisable not to stay too long at the Pizzo Sopra la Fossa because of the emission of sulfur and ammonia gas.
