A chapel was built here around 800 AD. On this event (capellun) the name Westerkappeln can be traced back.

getting there

By plane

The nearest international airport is the Munster Osnabrück Airport (30 km south).

By train

The Westerkappeln train station is on the Tecklenburger Nordbahn. This is currently only used for freight traffic, but a resumption of passenger traffic has been under discussion for years. Until further notice, the next train station with passenger traffic is still in Osnabrück. From there it is just under half an hour by bus to Westerkappeln.

By bus

The express bus S10 between Recke (Westphalia) and Osnabrück also stops in Westerkappeln (27 minutes drive from the ZOB Osnabrück).

Furthermore, the Regiobus R11 stops between Westerkappeln and Osnabrück and the Regiobus R30 between Lotte and Ibbenbueren drives over Hollenberg's hill.

There is also a connection to via regional bus connections Lengerich (Bus line 143) and an additional connection with Ibbenbueren (Bus route 132).

In the street

The A30 is located in the south of the local area. Westerkappeln can be reached quickly via exit 13 Lotte, which is also in the local area.

The location can also be accessed via the A1 Quickly reach Osnabrück-Hafen with exit 71.

By boat

The Mittelland Canal runs through the town, but does not offer a port there. Right on the border between Lotte and Osnabrück a branch canal to the Mittelland Canal runs on the Osnabrück side. The Osnabrück Motor Yacht Club with a marina is located here.

  • The 1 Evangelical town church dates back to the 12th century and was expanded several times up to the 16th century. The ringing still consists of bells from the 16th and 17th centuries.
  • The 2 Well in the town center shows a golden hare with a flower. In winter the rabbit is given a blue cage so that it does not "run away".
  • 3 House Cappeln - The castle of Cappeln was built here around the year 1100, which was destroyed in the course of armed conflict with Osnabrück in 1382. The manor Cappeln was built here from the 16th century.
  • The manor 4 House Velpe goes back to the 13th century. Today the old gatehouse and parts of the moat can still be seen.
  • The historical one 5 Velpe watermill from the 16th century has been in operation again since 1990.
