background
From ancient times, Polish, German and Jewish influences mixed in the area. The moraine hills are lower here than in Masuria. There are numerous post-glacial lakes. In comparison to Suwałki Lake District however, the lakes are relatively shallow.
Mostly it is under the term Pomeranian Lake District especially the area of the lakes Drage, so the Dramburger Lake District, Roger that. The smaller lake districts that connect to the east and west are also included in the Pomeranian lake district. The Pomeranian Lake District is shaped by hundreds of lakes and moraine hills from the Ice Age and is ideal for water sports. Most of the large lakes are connected to rivers (e.g. the Drawa), so that canoeists and sailors can practically find hundreds of kilometers of waterways. The Johannes Paul II canoe route along the Drawa, which is named after its most famous canoeist, is particularly popular.
The name Pomerania goes back to the Polish word Pomorze, which also occurs in other West Slavic languages and means "land by the sea". The Pomeranians were a West Slavic tribe that had been subjugated and Christianized by the Polans from the Greater Poland heartland since the 10th century. The original Slavic religion was successfully defended until the arrival of Bishop Otto from Bamberg in the 12th century.
