Zarrentin am Schaalsee is located on the southwest bank of the Schaalsee on the border with the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Zarrentin has been a member of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region since 2012 and is located approx. 55 km east of Hamburg and 35 km west of Schwerin. The city impresses above all with its wonderful location on the southern tip of the Schaalsee. It is the gateway to the Schaalsee region, one of the most beautiful lake landscapes in northern Germany.

The place was first mentioned in 1194 as "Zarnethin" as a German parish village, with a Romanesque stone church. The Cistercian convent was founded around 1250 and the parish church became a monastery church. During the Thirty Years War, Zarrentin was also looted, pillaged and murdered by imperial or Swedish troops. The original street village expanded in the 19th century. In 1896 it was connected to the Hagenow Land – Bad Oldesloe railway line, and Zarrentin grew considerably. In 2000, however, regular passenger traffic was discontinued. On April 1, 1938, Zarrentin received town charter. Since then it has also developed into an excursion and vacation spot. After the Second World War, Zarrentin became an isolated border town in a controlled border district of the GDR. After the fall of the Wall, the city was thoroughly redeveloped from 1991 with the help of urban development funding. “Soft” tourism also experienced a significant upswing. Since 1922 Zarrentin has had a coat of arms on the Schaalsee, which on the one hand refers to the location of the place on the Schaalsee and on the other hand to the vendace occurring in this lake. The abbess's staff should remind of the former nunnery.

Kirche Zarrentin in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaKirche Zarrentin im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsKirche Zarrentin (Q1631349) in der Datenbank Wikidata. The church is a Gothic parish church and a former monastery church. The Romanesque stone and brick church in the diocese of Ratzeburg was a village church in the first half of the 13th century. The Zarrentin monastery was founded as a Cistercian convent around 1250. The parish church now also became a monastery church. The Romanesque field stone masonry of the square choir dates from the 1230s / 40s. Around 1300/10 the choir was raised with brickwork. On the choir walls there are heavily restored, scenic wall paintings from the second half of the 14th century. In 1460, using parts of the old church with drainage means, today's Gothic, single-nave nave was built from bricks. In 1552 the nunnery was closed and the church was again the parish church of the village. The west tower was not completed until 1672.
  • 2  St. Abundus Church, Dorfstrasse 57, 19246 Zarrentin am Schaalsee, OT Lassahn (in the OT-Lassahn). It has a field stone choir. The pointed arches of the slender windows and the wall template of the priest's gate as well as the edging of the staggered group of three windows in the east wall are made of brick. From this it can be concluded that the choir is probably in its original form and dates back to around 1240. The nave from the 17th century was designed as half-timbered. The timber-clad western section on the lake side with the tower was built around 1740. Above the square tower tower with the bell chamber there is an octagonal, pointed spire. Donations made it possible to cast a new bell that was inaugurated in November 1993. Two disused bells are exhibited in the churchyard.
  • 3  Neuhof Church, Am Schloss 10, 19246 Zarrentin am Schaalsee OT Neuhof. Kirche Neuhof im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsKirche Neuhof (Q104530070) in der Datenbank Wikidata. The church, built in 1859, is located in the cemetery in the Neuhof district. It is a single-nave, neo-Gothic, 3-bay building with a straight choir made of bricks. The small lateral west tower over a polygonal floor plan is 3-storey. He wears a pointed, octagonal helmet. The coat of arms of the von Treuenfels family is emblazoned above a decorative frieze in a circular panel. The chapel was used by the family v. Treuenfels as a burial place. In front of the chapel, leaning against the tower, stands the larger than life statue of the apostle Peter.

Dorfkirche Neuenkirchen im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsDorfkirche Neuenkirchen (Q104541896) in der Datenbank Wikidata.Parts of the church, which was built in 1197 a little away from the old village, are still the basis of the interesting little village church. The nave with an integrated belfry was not attached to the choir until 1680 as a half-timbered construction, as can be seen from the inscription on the door beam. The east gable adorned with panels is particularly beautiful. A bell from 1762 hangs in the belfry.
