Zistersdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1160. Around 1250 the village received a city wall and in 1284 city rights. The Erfölfelder von Zistersdorf were developed from 1930 and today represent a large part of the oil produced in Austria.

The railway line Drösing–Zistersdorf is only used for freight traffic. The next train station with regional train connections is in Drösing, there you have to change to the regional bus 563.

There are bus stops for regional buses at Schlossplatz and at the town hall:

- Zistersdorf Castle: Erected from 1278, additions and alterations from the 17th and 18th centuries.
- City parish church, former Franciscan monastery

- Partly preserved city wall with powder tower and city gate
