Đà Nẵng - Đà Nẵng

Đà Nẵng

The provincial Đà Nẵng is the fifth largest city of Vietnam and is located about halfway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. During the colonial days the place was known as Tourane.

background

The city center, Hải Châu, lies on the shores of the south side of a sheltered bay that forms a natural harbor. The metropolis is less interesting from a tourist point of view, but it is important as a traffic junction and forms a centrally located gateway to the nearby world heritage sites.

By plane

Da Nang International Airport

The airfield, which grew out of the military airfield of the colonial era, was expanded by the Americans. Since the completion of the expansion in 2007-12, the 1 Airport (DAD) more and more international flights, especially direct flights from the nearer Asian region. One advantage of the airport, which is not equipped with too many service providers, is its proximity to the city center, which is barely four kilometers away. Taxi drivers like to charge moon prices, especially at night. Even if the taximeters are switched on, as everywhere in Vietnam, one cannot be sure that they have not been manipulated and that they run “faster”. More than U $ 5 is overdrawn for a destination in the city.

By train

Timetables

Da Nang Railway Station.

The place is on the north-south main line. All of the four express trains that run daily in both directions stop here.

If you really want to enjoy the landscape on the beautiful route to Hue, the best (and cheapest) way is to take the local slow train - which takes 4½ hours, however. The “Renunification Express” runs 2½-3 hours.

By bus

Driving times: Huế 3 hours, Hanoi 16-18, Saigon 16-20.

2  Bus station, 201 Tôn Đức Thắng. Is further outside the city center, from which you can get there with city bus 2, than the airport.Open: 7 am-7pm.

From Laos

Direct buses out Laos drive from Vientiane (see bus station; from 7 p.m., continue via Huế) in a good 15 hours. Of Pakse (Departure 8.00 am) the journey takes 12-13 hours. In both places it should be noted that agencies like to advertise with heavily embellished photos and collect substantial commissions, so you should buy the tickets directly at the bus stations. Note that dollar change is required to cross the border.

In the street

Over the Hai-Van, the cloud pass, you get from Huế (about 100 kilometers) to Da Nang. The pass forms the natural border between North and South Vietnam. The road is well developed and you have a scenic drive along the coast, but sections are tunneled under.

By boat

The port of Da Nang 3 Tien Sa Port is located a little north of the city center and is a popular destination for cruise ships.
