Ayamonte is a Spanish city in the Huelva Province, in the Autonomous Region of Andalusia on the border with Portugal.

At the mouth of the Río Guadiana in the Atlantic there was already at the time of the Second Punic War (200 BC) a Greek settlement called Anapotaman (over the river), later a Roman castle guarded the mouth of the Ostium fluminis anae. From there an important trade route led to the north Merida. It is believed that Ayamonte played a strategically important position during this period.
More recently, evidence of a settlement in the area was discovered as early as the Copper Age (4300-2200 BC) (Dolmen of Cabezo del Romeral).

Ayamonte in the 17th century

There are no surviving documents from the time of the Moorish rule, in 1239 the Moors were expelled from Portugal by the troops of King Sancho II and the place was placed under the Santiagoorden. In 1263 the Guadiana was established as the border between Portugal and Spain, and the town came under the sovereignty of the Castilian crown. At the beginning of the 14th century, Ayamonte came into the possession of the Guzman family together with Lepe. In 1471 the title was given to the Duke of Béjar, Pedro de Zúñiga Conde de Ayamonte bestowed, in 1521 King Carlos I bestowed the title on Francisco de Zúñiga y Guzmán II Marqués y señor del estado de Ayamonte. In the 16th century, the port of Ayamonte gained some strategic importance, as large ships could also enter here.   • Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de las Angustias. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias was built in the 16th century and rebuilt after being partially destroyed by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.   • Iglesia de San Francisco. Part of the former Franciscan monastery founded in 1527 in Barrio de La Villa, is a renaissance building with a graceful bell tower. Inside there is a beautifully painted ceiling and columns decorated with ancient inscriptions.
  • Ermita de San Sebastian. Also in Barrio de La Villa, was built in 1520 by order of Carlos I (Charles V) in the Sevillian style. Badly damaged in the Spanish Civil War, it was restored in 1948 and 2000. Today it serves as a culture and exhibition center.
  • Plaza de la Laguna. The central square of the city. It is lined with benches richly decorated with azulejos. It says that here too town hall (Ayuntamiento de Ayamonte), a typical Sevillian style building from the 18th century. (Viewing possible during office hours).
