Huelva is a provincial town in Autonomous Region of Andalusia (Southern Spain).
background
Huelva (Spanish too Huelva Capital) has been the capital of the Huelva Province in the Autonomous Region of Andalusia. It has around 146,000 inhabitants and is located between the state border with Portugal in the west and the Coto de Doñana National Park in the east on the Atlantic coast of Costa de la Luz at the four-kilometer-wide confluence of the Odiel and Río Tinto, which flow into the Atlantic Ocean here.

Huelva, the westernmost of the Andalusian provincial capitals, was the center of the Tartessos civilization over 3000 years ago and an important trading center that had intensive business relations with other ports in the western Mediterranean. Centuries later it became the base of the Phoenicians who used it Onuba called. Among the Romans who began to mine ore was Onuba Aestuaria Part of the Baetica Province and a thriving city.
At the time of the Visigoths, the neighboring village of Niebla (Elepla) not only received great civil and military influence within the region but also became a bishopric.
After the conquest by Abd-al-Aziz in 713, the Moors changed the name Welbah, which is considered to be the origin of the Spanish name Huelva. Abd al-Aziz al-Bakri was built in 1012 after the fall of the Caliphate of Cordoba the Taifa Kingdom of Huelva which lasted 40 years and gave itself the title Señor de Umba y Xaltis.
Alfonso X, the Wise, recaptured Niebla and Huelva from the Moors in 1262, and Huelva fell to the Kingdom of Castile and León. From the middle of the 15th century to the middle of the 19th century, the entire area was owned by the Dukes of Medina-Sidonia.
On November 1, 1755 at 10:00 a.m., a severe earthquake struck, with the epicenter near Lisbon. The quake lasted about six minutes and destroyed large parts of the Iberian Peninsula. Eight people died in Huelva and most of the buildings were destroyed or badly damaged. This explains the lack of many monuments and buildings from the time before this event.
In 1873 the state sold the nearby Río Tinto copper mines to the British Rio Tinto Company Limited. This led to a boom in industry, transportation and urban development, and also had an impact on architecture. The sleepy little village became a modern industrial city of the 19th century. Among the new buildings were, for example, railway facilities with the train station that still exists today, and a loading quay in the harbor basin. The connection to the rail network enabled the immigration of new workers (mainly from Andalusia, Badajoz and Galicia) and an expansion of the city. The districts Las Colonias and El Matadero originated near the wetlands (Marisma).
In the 20th century, after the decline of mining, numerous companies in the chemical industry and a paper mill settled on the outskirts. This led to considerable environmental pollution in the region.

Anyone who has statutory health insurance in Germany and one of the new EU-wide health insurance cards can simply go to the nearest public health center (Centro de Salud) and will be treated like a Spaniard after a bit of paperwork. However, knowledge of Spanish is strongly recommended here. If you do not yet have a health insurance card that is valid throughout the EU, you should have one issued before you leave, usually within a few days. The co-payment for medication is 40 percent. However, medicines are usually considerably cheaper in Spain than in Germany, and medicines that have to be paid for privately in Germany can also be prescribed.
The Pharmacies are usually open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. Some are open 24 hours and there is an emergency service.
