background

El Palmar has remained a small village to this day, which lies on the edge of a 4.2 km long, mostly wide sandy beach, which connects to the beaches of Conil to the south after the mouth of the Rio Salado. Until the construction of the connecting road A-2233 from Conil after Vejer and Zahara it was practically isolated due to the lack of transport links. The residents lived from fishing and cultivating the surrounding alluvial land.

Besides Tarifa, the beaches are considered to be excellent Surfing area, so that the place now lives almost exclusively from athletes and mainly from beach tourism in July and August. Several attempts to set up large hotel complexes here have so far failed because of the real estate crisis that has hit the whole country, but there is also increasing resistance from residents and nature conservationists. So, at least for the near future, apart from the highlights of the bathing or surfing season, the place will remain quite secluded, and the gastronomic infrastructure will also be close to zero outside of these times.

nightlife

Surfers are not children of sadness. As long as they frequent the local surf schools, the bars on the waterfront are likely to get busy, otherwise it will be deep darkness.

accommodation

In the alleys behind the beach road there are many of the former village huts Apartments newly acquired or at least pimped up, some of which are operated by local surf schools or private landlords. At least until 2013, the "network of paths" behind the coastline was still partly like a military training area. In terms of infrastructure, there are certainly better alternatives in the immediate vicinity for a base for swimming and exploring the surrounding area.
