Isla Cristina is a Spanish city in the Huelva Province, in the Autonomous Region of Andalusia.

background

In 1724, after the War of the Spanish Succession, Catalan merchants were allowed by King Felipe V to extract salt to preserve meat and fish near the confluence of the Río Guadiana and Río Carreras in the Salt Marshes. After the settlement was destroyed by the Lisbon earthquake and the subsequent tidal wave, the place was re-founded in 1756 by Catalan and Valencian fishermen and initially La Figuereta, La Higuerita or La Figarilla after the fresh water source, which is near a fig tree (span .: higuera) was discovered called.
Between 1774 and 1776 it came here and in Ayamonte on the immigration of Portuguese fishermen from Montegordo, which was destroyed by the earthquake, who refused to move to the new town of Villa Real de San Antonio, built by the Marqués de Pombal.
In 1802 the place became the municipality independent of Ayamonte Real Isla de la Higuerita and renamed Isla Cristina in 1834 (in honor of the Spanish Queen María Cristina de Borbón). At the end of the 19th century, fishing (tuna and sardines) became increasingly important and the first canned fish factories were built, the place now has already over 5,000 inhabitants. Around 1920 Isla Christina has almost 10,000 inhabitants and exports canned fish all over the world, especially to France and Scandinavia.
The factories still exist today, but since the tuna has almost completely disappeared from the waters off the coast, it is brought in by the Galician fishing fleets, the local fishermen only supply the regional markets with fresh fish, but it is still one of the most important Fishing ports of Andalusia.
