Berg Castle

Berg Castle

The client was Hans Georg von Hörwarth, who had the castle building built in 1640 in the style of an Italian villa and as a replacement for a former manor house on the same site.

In 1676, Elector Ferdinand Maria acquired the castle together with the Hofmark Berg, and the castle park was created. The castle was used by the Wittelsbachers for their lavish sea and hunting festivals. King Max I Joseph (1756 - 1826) was less interested in the festivals, the baroque parks became overgrown and were converted into an English landscape garden.

King Ludwig I then brought court life back to the palace at the beginning of the 1830s; under King Max II, corner towers were added between 1849 and 1851; At that time the castle was very similar to the "Sisi" castle on the other side of the lake Possenhofen.

The current, simple form of Berg Castle emerged after the Second World War; the corner towers damaged in the war and the roof battlements were demolished.

The castle, which has been used by the Wittelsbachers to this day, is not accessible to tourists, it is hidden behind a high wall and can only be seen from the lake.

June 13th (Pentecost Sunday): The king finds his death in Lake Starnberg under circumstances that have not yet been clarified: Around 6.45 p.m. the king and Dr. Gudden opened the castle for one last Sunday stroll towards the lake, this time Gudden strictly forbade the keepers to go along. When the two have still not returned to the castle at around 8 p.m., all available gendarmes and men with lamps and torches are sent out to search. Around 11 p.m. the corpses of Ludwig, who was known to be a very good swimmer, and that of the doctor were found floating about 20 meters from the bank in the shallow and less than a meter deep water.

June 19: Burial of King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the Munich crypt Michael's ChurchAccording to the tradition of the House of Wittelsbach, his heart is placed in an urn in the Gnadenkapelle in Altoetting kept.

The myth around King Ludwig II. Already formed during the lifetime of today's psychiatrists as unworldly, but not insane esteemed monarchs. "I want to remain an eternal mystery to myself and others", Ludwig once wrote to his governess. There are numerous rumors about the circumstances of death, which have not yet been clarified, ranging from an attempted escape to the shooting of the king.

To commemorate the king's mysterious death, a cross was placed in the water at the spot in the lake where the king's body was found. The water here is quite shallow in the entire bank area and not deeper than a meter.

On the rather steep lakeshore there is the Votive Chapel. The foundation stone was laid at the instigation of Prince Regent Luitpold exactly ten years after the unfortunate events. The memorial chapel was designed as a dome building in the early Romanesque style according to the plans of court chief architect Julius Hofmann and inaugurated after four years of construction.

Every year, the chapel is the meeting place for the "loyal to the king" who gather for a memorial service in the votive chapel on the day the king died.

In front of the portal of the votive chapel, the staircase leads to the Gothic death lamp, it was erected by Queen Marie in 1887.

Diving

See also the general information in the relevant Diving section to the starnberger Lake.

The Allmannshauser steep face The Allmanshausen district is popular with divers as "the edge", but it is also dangerous: the steep face near the bank runs parallel to the shore line and at depths between 20 and 80 meters. Overhanging areas, small terraces and ledges and the wreck of a sailing boat at a depth of around 80 meters make the "edge" one of the most popular diving destinations in the Upper Bavarian lakes. According to experts, 95 percent of all dives in Lake Starnberg take place here.

But the wall is also dangerous: eleven divers have died here since 1994 alone. The diving area hit the headlines again in March 2013: two of the divers between the ages of 67 and 47 were killed during a dive by three experienced rescue divers from the Fürstenfeldbruck water rescue service.

There is no specific scheme for accidents, so the responsible district office does not issue a diving ban.
