Geographical notes

Canegrate is located in the Legnanese, along the river Olona, south of the Varesine Prealps. The soil is mainly composed of pebbles, gravel, sand and clay. At one time it was covered by a thin layer of humus not very suitable for the growth of woods and subsequently for agricultural cultivation, so as to be largely groana. Due to the presence of clayey sedimented layers in correspondence with the ancient riverbeds of the Olona, the soil struggles to absorb rainwater.

Background

In 1926, in the Canegratese district of Santa Colomba, some archaeological finds came to light, which was not initially given much importance. Between March 1953 and autumn 1956 excavations were carried out for the recovery of other objects. in particular, a necropolis of about 200 tombs was discovered, some with a simple pit and others with a pit covered with stone and pebbles, as well as numerous bronze objects. The site appeared to be one of the largest in northern Italy, and was traced back to 1200 BC. classifying it between the middle and the recent Bronze Age. The prehistoric culture associated with it is known as Canegrate culture. It has an importance that goes beyond local borders.

Starting from the 4th century A.D. there was a progressive demographic decline throughout the region. The consequent depopulation of the countryside caused extensive damage to agricultural production, a factor that contributed to the fall of the Western Roman Empire (476 AD). After the invasion of the Goths in 533, the Canegrate area was conquered by the Lombards in 568 and Milan was occupied in September 569.

From 774 to 888 the territory of Canegrate was part of the Carolingian empire; during these years we can imagine the town as a small village made up of clay houses around which crops of cereals, vegetables and vines extended. Subsequently Canegrate was first included in the Burgaria countryside and then in the Seprio countryside, two of the "counties" into which the territory of Milan was divided in the Late Middle Ages.

The town was razed to the ground by Ottone Visconti in 1287 as part of the war against the Torriani who actually owned land in Canegrate. In 1261 the Augustinian canons of the church of San Giorgio at the castle of Legnano stipulated the exchange of their assets in this area, including a farmhouse called Meraviglia, a surname that was also recurrent in the following centuries. In 1261 the Torriani came into possession of the aforementioned assets in the territory but remained owners of them only until 1277.

From the Statutes of the waters and roads of the Milan countryside made in 1346, it appears that Canegrate, defined as "el locho da Canegrà", was part of the Parabiago parish church. The Canegratese community was responsible for the maintenance of the" strata da Rò ".

At the end of the eighteenth century the main activity of Canegrate was agriculture and, in particular, viticulture: the vineyards covered about 75% of the territory. In the following decades, sericulture began to appear, which slowly took the place of vine cultivation. In the nineteenth century the silkworm suffered a serious epidemic in the territory which, together with the increase in land rents and duties on basic necessities, inflicted a severe blow to the rural activities of the country.

In 1809, with the decree "November 4, 1809" issued by Napoleon Bonaparte, the neighboring municipality of San Giorgio su Legnano was suppressed and incorporated into the municipality of Canegrate.

In 1832, Giovanni Battista Rampoldi, in his Chorography of Italy described the town of Canegrate as follows: "Canegrate, village of Lombardy, province of Milan, parish of Legnano. It is on a pleasant hill, at whose feet the Olona flows towards the east, in an area rich in vines and mulberry trees, one mile from Parabiago to borea and 7 from Bustoarsizio to sirocco. It has a silk factory and has almost a thousand inhabitants. In 1261 a strong clash took place there between the popular people of Milan, headed by the Torriani, against the nobles who had repaired to Castelseprio with their archbishop Leone da Perego.»

In 1901 Canegrate jumped to the headlines for the riots that swept the Lombard territory, in particular that of the province of Milan. Some colonists employed by the duke Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone rebelled against his economic claims and occupied the duke's palace, causing various damages.

Only after World War II Canegrate experienced an economic recovery: slowly abandoned agricultural activity and settled by now a more industrial culture, mechanical and footwear industries arose, which brought new jobs and a consequent increase in population.

In 1962 a part of the territory of the town was incorporated into the municipality of San Giorgio su Legnano while another part of the territory of the municipality of San Giorgio su Legnano was annexed to the municipality of Canegrate.

- the church of Santa Colomba
  • 1 Ancient church of Santa Maria Assunta, piazza Matteotti. Located in Piazza Matteotti, the central square of the town, it has an uncertain date. An ancient church probably existed before 1200, but around 1570 another was built on the ancient cemetery, given that a document drawn up in Busto Arsizio in those years, a certain Wonder of Canegrate donated some goods to the Church. On the east side of the building the date 1588 is reported, probable restructuring or expansion, while another inscription located on the west wing reports the year 1755, perhaps when the external plaster was set up. More precise information comes from Cardinal Carlo Borromeo, who saw it during the pastoral visit of 17 October 1566, describing it as a single rectangular nave, a semicircular apse with a" shell of turtle ", frescoed walls, brick paving and bell tower with bell, indicating it as dedicated to the" Circumcision of Our Lord Jesus Christ ", with holidays on January 1st. The entire complex remained the property of Castelli until 1853, when it was sold to the Visconti di Modrone, who in turn sold it to the industrialist Piantanida in 1920: from that moment it underwent various transformations and uses, up to the division of the property into various apartments. It was established in 1991 for the protection of the natural elements of the area and for the enhancement of agriculture, which engages about 80% of the park's surface with the cultivation of corn, wheat, wheat, oats, barley, soy and fodder. Of the remaining territorial area, 9% is characterized by woods, while 1% by roads, quarries and the Villoresi canal with its network of secondary irrigation canals. It is a local park of supra-municipal interest recognized by the Province of Milan on 10 March 2008 which develops around the Olona and the Villoresi Canal in the municipalities of Legnano, Canegrate, San Vittore Olona, Parabiago and Nerviano. The park is characterized by the presence of waterways in a densely urbanized and industrialized area. It includes the Castello di Legnano park, the agricultural areas along the Olona river up to the former Olivetano Monastery in Nerviano and the Villoresi canal up to the border with Lainate. The presence of wooded areas outside the Castello park is rare. In the park there are very important historical testimonies such as the castle of Legnano, the former Visconti di Modrone factory (now used as a residential center) and six mills, the last to testify to the ancient milling tradition of the area. The Parco dei Mulini can be visited by bicycle. A cycle path already funded by the Lombardy Region is being designed which will connect the urban park of Castello di Legnano to Nerviano. Already now it is possible to cross the Park on dirt or asphalted roads suitable for cyclists with the exception of the stretch affected by a busy road between the small island of San Lorenzo di Parabiago and the Villoresi Canal.

The area covers approximately 360 hectares, of which approximately 178 are in the Municipality of Legnano, 126 in the Municipality of Busto Arsizio and 53 hectares in the Municipality of Castellanza. The boundaries are delimited by the peripheries of the three municipalities and include a large area with a predominantly agricultural vocation. The Alto Milanese Park is located in an area where the passage from the high dry plain to the low one rich in waters and springs is visible. Thanks to the presence of traditional agricultural areas and rural buildings such as farmhouses and stables, the park is inhabited by the owl, the swallow, the black redstart, the bat and other species that would not find a place elsewhere. The presence, in constant increase, of the blackbird and the turtledove is also signaled. The presence, on the other hand, of oaks is the ideal habitat for the great spotted woodpecker and squirrel, as well as for all those species, such as bats, which need large cavities in the trunks for reproduction or wintering. The border hedges along the cultivated fields also provide an important living environment for many animals
