Cordes-sur-Ciel is a commune in the département Camouflage in France. The medieval town, located on a hill, is one of the most important tourist sites in the region Midi-Pyrénées.

background

The village of Cordes-sur-Ciel is located on a hill, around 150 meters above sea level, between the Cérou river and its tributary Aurausse. It was built in the 13th century by the Count of Toulouse under the name Cordes as a protective castle during the Albigensian Crusade. Because of the narrow alleys, the place was not interesting for industrial development and so, with a few exceptions, a medieval townscape has been preserved. There is also a beautiful view of the surrounding, flat valleys.

In the 20th century, some painters, sculptors and writers moved here to work in peace and seclusion. Among them was the writer Jeanne Ramel-Cals. She named the place Cordes-sur-Ciel, which means something like "Cordes in the sky". In spring and autumn fog forms over the rivers, so that only the upper part of the village protrudes from the sea of fog. Then it looks like Cordes is the only town far and wide. The city council took up this idea and in 1993 the name was officially changed to Cordes-sur-Ciel. In 2014 the place took first place in the television program "The Most Popular Villages of the French" (Le Village préféré des Français) on France 2.
