Western Cordillera (Cordillera Occidental) is one of the three main branches into which the Andes mountain range in Colombia.

Geographical notes

It extends from south to north, from the Nude de los Pastos in Department of Nariño, to the nude de Paramillo, in Department of Córdoba.

The highest peaks are the Cumbal volcano, with 4,764 meters above sea level, and the Farallones de Cali with 4,280 meters.

The western flanks of the range fall within the catchment areas that flow into the Pacific Ocean, including the San Juan River, while the eastern flank falls into the Bavino of the Cauca River. The northern and north-western regions fall within the basins that flow into the Atlantic coast, in particular the Atrato and Sinu rivers.

Territories and tourist destinations

The following territories are preferably assigned to the coastal region of the Pacific, while embracing a portion of the west side of the mountain range.

The department of Córdoba (11%), on the other hand, is generally considered part of the Caribbean region.
