Geographical notes

Ancient house

In the fertile Po Valley of lower Lombardy, on the edge of the Cremonese territory where it borders with the Casalasca area of the District Oglio Po. It is 20 kilometers from Cremona and 25 from Casalmaggiore.

Background

Of uncertain etymology, according to some scholars, the toponym derives from a De Rovere family, the name with which it was still indicated in the nineteenth century; according to others by the presence of oak trees. Be that as it may, the country has not filled the chronicles of history with itself.

Like all the towns in the area, it suffered the raids of militias fighting between the opposing Milanese, Mantuan and Venetian powers. The rest of his life has passed marked by work in the fields and the passing of the seasons. Its territory saw the succession of various noble families who had vast landholdings here and who left their name to their memory in addition to the toponym of the locality: Casalorzo Geroldi, Casalorzo Boldori, Ca 'de' Bonavogli, Ca 'de' Novelli, Ca 'de' Corti, Ca 'de' Cervi, Ca 'de' Stavoli ....., with a proliferation of named villages Ca ' which is typical of this Po Valley area.

The building of the area is characterized by the large isolated quadrilateral Cremona farmhouses, with the massive manor house that dominates the vast farmyard, often surrounded by a high wall that encloses, almost as a fortification, the houses of the peasants, the stables, the barchessali , and with a large access portal, the only way of entry, almost the equivalent of the drawbridge in the castles. It is not uncommon to find, in the larger farmhouses, the presence of a church or an oratory, a symbol of the economic power achieved by the owner of the land, but also an indication of the large number of employees who lived with their families in this microcosm the most sometimes totally self-sufficient. With the mechanization of agricultural work, the farmhouses, which in this area are not completely abandoned as in other parts, have been emptied of workers and inhabitants, and continue their existence silently away from the developments of the urban centers.

  • 1 Sanctuary of Ca 'de' Cervi (at Ca 'de' Cervi). The Postumia provincial road follows in this area, with its long straight, the ancient one via Postumia of the Romans, and proceeds parallel for a long stretch with the Dugale Delmona. On an embankment of the canal, in the territory of Derovere in the locality of Ca 'de' Cervi, stands the small Sanctuary dedicated to Mary Mother of the Divine Word. Over the centuries its title varied from St. Joseph to Blessed Virgin of Caravaggio, to Blessed Virgin of the Apparition, to Blessed Virgin of Ca 'de' Cervi.

The reason for its existence is instead linked to a single miraculous fact, which tradition places in 1650. A nine-year-old deaf-mute girl, named Monica, was bringing lunch to her father who worked in the fields, as every day, when she met the Virgin who restored her hearing and speech, and asked her to build a chapel in her honor. The news of the event led the local population to erect the small church that can still be seen, with an eighteenth-century style facade, on a canal embankment, in a land that was donated by the nobleman Francesco Grasselli. The Sanctuary was completed in 1712, and depends on the parish of Derovere.

The interior, with simple and elegant classic lines, has a single nave with cross vaults. The altar, a few steps higher than the hall, with a small altarpiece, shows at the bottom of the apse a fresco of the Madonna trampling the snake, symbol of the devil, with her foot. On the sides of the fresco, two windows light up the apse, which is adorned along its perimeter by a wooden choir.

Externally the facade is enlivened by two columns with Ionic capitals on each side; by a protruding string course that delimits the gable elaborated with five pinnacles, one on each side and three at the top; by a triangular tympanum on the entrance door and by a window between the entrance and the tympanum which together with the two windows of the apse makes the interior very bright.

On the south side facing the course of the Dugal Delmona there is an aedicule dedicated to the Blessed Virgin by Caravaggio, which contains a fresco depicting the Virgin speaking with little Monica, protagonist of the apparition; in the background is reproduced the Delmona canal with the Sanctuary.

The celebrations in memory of the miraculous event are held every year on the second Sunday of July.

St. George
San Giorgio - Interior
  • 2 Parish Church of San Giorgio, Piazza San Giorgio. A document dated 1057 testifies to the confirmation of goods granted by the Emperor Henry IV to Bishop Ubaldo; in this document the existence in Derovere of an ancient parish is mentioned.

The current parish church, dedicated to San Giorgio, does not look so ancient; in fact, its characteristics refer to eighteenth-century architectural canons and tastes. The façade with a tympanum refined by three pinnacles, and the high bell tower give the whole a considerable momentum. The building is also enhanced by the large open space that precedes it, so that the volume of the church is highlighted and is notably enhanced.

Around

  • Torre de 'Picenardi - Villa Sommi Picenardi developed from a pre-existing castle nucleus; starting from the sixteenth century it was transformed in the following centuries up to its present appearance. A body of the villa, in neoclassical style, overlooks the town square. A second factory develops inside and is connected to the ancient body of the primitive castle. A large garden surrounds the villa complex, surrounded by a large moat with water.
  • San Lorenzo de 'Picenardi - Its Castle, built in the fifteenth century, was enlarged over time to then arrive at its present form, majestic and decidedly castellana, in the nineteenth century, the work of the architect Luigi Voghera. The vast building, in perfect condition, shows numerous crenellated towers which give it the characteristic medieval aspect, however mitigated by the elegant character of a noble castle residence. It is surrounded by a large park.
  • Cicognolo - Exposed terracotta and marble make the imposing Manfredi castle look valuable and varied, scenographic in the green lawn that embellishes the ground in front of the main facade, with a romantic garden and moat behind it.
  • Cremona - It has a monumental historic center - the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Town Hall - among the most distinguished in Lombardy. It was a Roman city. It was powerful at the time of the Communes and rivaled Milan, which finally subdued it. His violins (Stradivari and Amati), his Torrazzo and even more his torrone, are known everywhere.
