Long stretched on a ridge of approx. 800 m height, Frauenwald is the oldest place on the Rennsteig, directly on the former Erfurt - Nuremberg road. The first mentions of the settlement go back to 1218.

Countless hiking opportunities, wild and romantic nature, the life-giving forest, cool romantic streams and mountain meadows rich in species characterize the area here in the middle of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Thuringian Forest. The varied landscape and the nearby dam make the heart of every nature lover beat faster. This is where the Rennsteig, Lutherweg, Ilmtal Cycle Path and the Rennsteig mountain bike route meet. Bunker Museum

In the immediate vicinity of Frauenwald there is a Bunker Museum. A guided tour gives visitors an insight into the recent history of East Germany. While a large number of bunkers were built as combat and protection systems, the system at the “Rennsteighöhe” hotel is a command bunker, similar to those that were used in World War II.

St. Nicolai Church

The St. Nicolai Church stands in the center of the village on the grounds of a former monastery. It was built in 1831 based on a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The tower was not added to the nave until 1911. The organ was built by Theodor Kühn in 1888 and the sound was redesigned in 1939 and 1959.

The monument at the drill rig was inaugurated on July 25, 1937 with great sympathy from the people of Frauenwald. It was built according to the idea of ​​the then mayor Alfred Robert Kahl, the plans of the architect Liebermann from Königsee and the sculptor Hermann Keck from Saalfeld. The history of Frauenwald from 1218 to 1918 is presented on three pages. The monument finds the crowning glory in a capital red deer with a view of the town.
