The community Galtür is the highest place in the Paznauntales in Tyrol. The main line of business is tourism, the focus is on winter sports.
background
The oldest avalanche barriers in the Alps are documented in Galtür in 1613, and the village itself was considered safe from avalanches until modern times.
Tourism in Galtür began in the twenties of the last century with the expansion of road connections in Paznaun.
Since April 22, 1997, Galtür has been the first official climatic health resort in all of Tyrol.
The year 1999 is the year of major avalanche disaster for the whole of Galtür: After long and intense snowfalls, a huge avalanche broke off on February 23 from the Grieskogel north of the village at a height of 2,700 m and with a width of 400 meters even reached the center of Galtür, which was previously considered safe, where numerous buildings will be destroyed. In the particularly affected western part of the community, 31 people were killed in the avalanche disaster.

The ski area is divided into six sectors: Zwergerlwelt, Abenteuerland, Actionpark, Heldenreich, Pistenparadies as well as High & Nordic.
The Galtür ski area is not quite as big as that of the neighboring one Ischgl, with the northern slopes on the Silvretta, however, is just as snow-reliable.
