To know

Background

The first mention of the community of Giovo (Comunitas de Zovo) in the sense of civil administration dates back to 1211, while in subsequent documents the presence of a Rule assembly of the municipality is well attested. Throughout the medieval period and until the Napoleonic suppression the territory of Giovo (Comitatus Zovi et Faedi), including the current area of Giovo, Faedo, Lavis and the area of San Michele on the left of the Adige, continued to be a fief owned by the Episcopal Principality of Trento. The Appiano family first benefited from the numerous investments relating to this strategic land ownership.

Jurisdictional seat was the ancient castle of Monreale (or of Königsberg) in San Michele of which there is evidence as early as 1243. Around 1276 the castle and jurisdiction passed to the Counts of Tyrol who controlled it until 1407, when the Thunns took over. In 1648 the Zenobio of Venice held the government of the jurisdiction and finally the Zenobio-Albrizzi who renounced it in 1834. The county of Giovo and Faedo in the past represented a road axis of great importance. Ad iugum (from the Latin iugum = step), hence the name Jupiter, was called the passage that gives Salorno it went up to the Sauch, and through the territory of Faedo, it went down to Vesin (today Ville), bypassing the often flooded plain between the Chiusa di Salorno and San Michele upstream on the left Adige.

In Vesin the watchtower built in the 15th century with an evident garrison function is still visible. The building was an integral part of a complex of houses with towers called Castel Giovo or Castello della Rosa, home to families of notaries and notables who, since the 12th century, played the role of gastaldi and vicars of Königsberg. However, Castel Giovo was never a judicial and administrative seat. The community of Giovo appears from the beginning as a territorial entity divided into at least four districts (colomelli): Verla-Mosana, Valternigo-Ceola, Ville, Palù. At the head of the municipality there was since 1529 a regano assisted by mayors (a sort of fraction leaders), by a secretary and by a clerk.

How to get around

What see

Verla di Giovo - Church of Santa Maria Assunta
  • Church of Santa Maria Assunta (in Verla di Giovo). Seat of the parish church of Giovo, it was built in the years from 1766 to 1774, based on a project by the Como architect Caminada. In late Baroque style, it has a facade with solemn forms, punctuated by pilasters and stucco cornices. On the southern side rises the bell tower, also from the eighteenth century, 50 meters high and surmounted by a characteristic pear-shaped dome. The precious decoration in polychrome stucco enhances the airiness of the hall with a single nave inside. The choir houses a precious organ, built around 1754 by Wörle for the Sanctuary of Pietralba and purchased by the parish around 1788.
  • Church of Sant'Antonio (in Verla di Giovo). The church was born around 1724 as a public chapel for the village of Verla, originally dedicated to the Madonna dell'Aiuto. The dedication to Sant'Antonio is mentioned for the first time in 1775. At the center of the main altar the altarpiece depicts the Madonna Help of Christians with the saints Antonio Abate and Francesco di Paola at the bottom. A valuable side altar is placed in the left niche. The altarpiece is the work of Don Martino Gabrielli (1681-1747).
  • Church of San Giorgio. It is already mentioned as a place of hermitage in 1369. Rebuilt in the 5th century, the building was the destination in May of processions from Cembra, Segonzano and Meano to invoke protection on the fields from frost, hoarfrost and wrinkles. The polygonal apse preserves two Gothic windows in sandstone, while on the southern wall traces of a large one are visible Last Supper frescoed. Giambattista Ghezzi di Faedo was the last hermit of San Giorgio. The hermitage was suppressed by the law issued by Joseph II in 1782.
  • Church of San Floriano. It stands in a panoramic position on the homonymous hill of Valternigo di Giovo, which has been a prehistoric castle since time immemorial. The legend that links its foundation to the evangelizing work of San Vigilio is unequivocal evidence of the antiquity of this building, perhaps the first church in the Cembra valley and the parish church of Giovo. The current building, in Gothic style, stands on medieval foundations which are still partly frescoed. The bell tower with its characteristic Romanesque mullioned windows is surmounted by a pyramidal stone spire. The belfry houses a functioning bell since 1664. The strong asymmetry of the gabled façade is determined not only by the slope of the ground, but also by the decentralized opening of the Gothic sandstone portal with the window on the left side. Massive masonry buttresses move the external side walls.
  • Giovo Castle (Castle of the Rose) (in Ville di Giovo). It is also known as Castello della Rosa, due to the coat of arms depicting a rose once set in the walls of the current tower. Seat of the lords of Giovo, vassals of the Appiano, it was never a jurisdictional seat. It later passed to the Counts of Tyrol, to the Morembergs of Sardonico and to the barons a Meadow. The building, consisting of several buildings, was located, with a garrison function, near the pass (ad iugum) that led from Faedo to Giovo and from here towards the Adige Valley.
  • Roccolo Mosaner. Roccolo Mosaner is to be counted among the most significant testimonies of natural art. It is a plant complex consisting of beech and spruce trees pruned to create a circular arcade gallery. The structure, near the Sauch, was once used for catching birds. After a large number of birds had positioned themselves on the central space, attracted by pastures and by calling birds, the bogeys were shaken from the shed. The flight of the birds horizontally led them straight to a net stretched inside the tunnel, more than 60 meters long. Netting was prohibited in 1968.
