Gronau (Leine) is a small town in the Leine Valley, which is getting wider and wider, just before the transition to the Leineberglands in the north German lowlands. Gronau is the center of a joint municipality and a place of residence for numerous commuters to the surrounding cities of Hanover and Hildesheim.

The city was founded in 1298. It emerged from the three villages of Bekum, Empeda and Lehde, which can still be found in the city's street names today. Various names have been passed down as "Green Aue", which marked the location of the place on a furth through the Leine, and from which today's name emerged. With its two natural arms, the Leine offered natural protection, which was subsequently supplemented by man-made ditches as part of the medieval fortifications with city walls, ramparts and moats. You can still see the remains of the city fortifications on a walk around the city wall, which has now been dismantled and designed as a footpath (South wall and North wall) visit.
