Hunspach is a small village in the France.

To know

The small hamlet of Hunspach in Alsace in the department of Lower Rhine is a splendid example of a Franco-German rural town in an area whose political affiliation has for centuries fluctuated between Germany is France. Hunspach is on the list of the most beautiful villages in France.

Geographical notes

The small town of Hunspach, today part of the municipality of Wissembourg which is located at a very short distance from this, is included within the boundaries of Vosges ParkThe first mention of the village dates back to 1298 when Hunspach was a fiefdom of the great German elector of the Palatine. In the Renaissance period it depended on the Deux-Ponts Lords who resided in Cleebourg.

Having become a Protestant shortly after Martin Luther's reform, Hunspach was for a time administered by the swedes and then razed to the ground by the Catholics. The Swiss are credited with having rebuilt the city after the Swedish Crown abandoned all claims on its small French territory in 1787.

The nineteenth century saw a development of the urban center and the construction of the small railway station and the new bell tower for the local parish church.

Finally, during the twentieth century, Hunspach re-entered the plans of the Maginot line, of which Fort Schoenenbourg remains today a few kilometers from the town.

What see

Half-timbered houses of Hunspach
Fort Schoenenbourg

The first thing that strikes you as soon as you arrive in Hunspach is its beautifully preserved ancient architecture, made of half-timbered houses, here said à colombages. This type of architecture, very widespread in the Germanic and Scandinavian countries, is almost a rarity in France and Hunspach owes part of its fascination for the French to them too.

  • 1 Fort de Schœnenbourg, Route de Hoffen 3, 33 388 80 96 19, @. This fortification is the best example of a defensive structure of the Maginot line in Alsace. The Maginot Line was that integrated complex of fortifications, military works, anti-tank obstacles, machine gun emplacements, defensive flood systems, barracks and ammunition depots built from 1928 to 1940 by the French government to protect the borders that France had in common with the Belgium, the Luxembourg, the Germany, the Switzerland and theItaly. Underground tunnels branching off from the Fort are kilometers long.
  • 2 Hunspach Church. The Protestant church of Hunspach remembers the period in which, passing to Protestantism during the Lutheran reform, the phase of Swedish administration began here during which the city was burned by the Catholics during the wars of religion. The bell tower was then rebuilt in the nineteenth century while most of the rest of the building is still the original one.
