It is bordered to the west by France through the western Alps, to the north by Switzerland by the central Alps, to the east with the regions of the Trentino Alto Adige, of the Veneto andEmilia Romagna in Northeast Italy and to the south with the Ligurian Sea and the northern end of the Tuscany in central Italy. Story

The last centuries of the territory have been marked by the domination of the House of Savoy, across the mainland of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, which includes in addition to Piedmont, the Aosta Valley and Liguria. Lombardy, although culturally linked to Piedmont and Liguria, has historically developed major political and economic ties with Veneto (the Lombard-Veneto kingdom) and therefore with northeastern Italy.

Piedmont - The austere land of Piedmont initiated the achievement of Italian national unity in XIXe century. The Savoy dynasty, having dominated Piedmont for centuries, made Turin the capital of the new Italian state for a short time. The boom years saw Turin, like Milan, lead and stimulate the national economy open to industrialization, symbolized in particular by the automobile giant Fiat. The arrival of less prosperous economic periods than in the 1960s reduced the frantic pace of industrialization, drawing attention to other economic areas, in particular the tourism that Piedmont offers thanks to the artistic beauties of the cities, and natural beauty especially in its mountains.

Liguria - The Ligurians populated the whole region in prehistoric times and also vast areas beyond the current administrative boundaries. Regional unity came from Genoa, a seaside town competing for supremacy over the Mediterranean with Pisa, Amalfi and Venice. Between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries, Genoa united under its domination, not without cruel battles, all the cities of Liguria. The Napoleonic occupation put an end to the independence of the oligarchic Republic. The Congress of Vienna sanctioned the disappearance by attributing it to the House of Savoy. Liguria has been offering tourism consolidated for decades with a landscape characterized by the interpenetration between the sea and the mountains, which often descend almost vertically on the narrow coast rich in ravines and coves. Important Roman archaeological areas can be found in Ventimiglia and Luni. The Romanesque monuments in the towns clearly show the Lombard, Pisan, French and Byzantine influences, that is to say the populations most frequently in contact with the Ligurians thanks to trade.

Lombardy - The most industrialized region in the north with the economic heart in Milan. The huge conglomerate of the metropolis, which brings together dozens of cities, is not the only source of income. Agriculture, once a dominant activity in this land which largely includes the flat territory formed by the valley formed by the Po and its tributaries, still constitutes an important part of regional productive activity. Tourism income is fueled by the rich presence of art cities, and by the infrastructural development of the Long Alpine Arch with numerous ski resorts as well as summer resorts. Just below the high Alpine peaks, the Great Lakes area is a tourist attraction that attracts large numbers of people.

Aosta Valley - The Aosta Valley (or the Aosta Valley) retains its dual Italian-French nature in language and traditions. The inaccessible peaks of Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, and the Matterhorn which surround and encircle its territory have not made it impermeable to external influences. the passes of the Petit Saint-Bernard with France and the Grand Saint-Bernard with Switzerland have been for centuries the means of contact and exchange with the transalpine world. By there pilgrims, hikers, merchants, armies passed. Its many castles were strongholds against invading armies, but also refined noble residences. Tourism has brought prosperity and development, promoting the economy of the entire valley, which also benefits from elite tourism attracted by the gaming rooms of the Casino Saint Vincent.
