Geographical notes

Vernago lake is an artificial lake located near the homonymous village of val Senales in (South Tyrol).

Background

The lake was created by an earth gravity dam completed in 1963 and feeds the Naturno power plant. Following the construction of the dam, some Vernago farms were submerged by the water. The power plant is connected to the lake by a 15 km diversion tunnel with a diameter of 2.7 m which runs on the left side of the Val Senales and which also collects the waters of some side canals such as the Rio di Fosse. At the end of the tunnel begins the penstock of 2 km with a diameter of 2 m leading to the power plant.
