background
language
In addition to the national language Swedish, the Sami living in Lapland keep various Sami languages alive. In the early 19th century, these languages were largely banned because the Sami were considered a primitive people who had no right to exist in the sense of social Darwinism.
Other languages spoken are Norwegian and Finnish. English is also often to be found on the long-distance hiking trails, which are now also heavily frequented internationally.
getting there
You can arrive by car, plane or night train. Most airports are quite small and have seldom or no scheduled flights. Night trains run regularly from Stockholm to Lapland, for example.
mobility
The area is very sparsely populated. When traveling by car in winter, please note that the roads in Sweden are not strewn, but the compacted snow serves as a roadway. Special tires with spikes are required.
