The former trading town To run lies with its historic old town in a river bend on the west bank of the Salzach in Rupertiwinkel in Upper Bavaria and right on the border too Austria.

background

Salzach

The old town of Laufen is strategically located and protected on three sides in a loop of the Salzach, the river here is also the border to Austria. The modern settlements of Laufen adjoin the old town to the west.

The place opposite on the east side on the other side of the river Oberndorf was previously a suburb of Laufen, but is now in Austria. This is where Joseph Mohr composed the Christmas carol "Silent Night, Holy Night" in 1818.

The old town of Laufen is also known nationwide as a film set for the television series, which was filmed from 1968 to 1970 and has been repeated on many channels since then "Royal Bavarian District Court": The outside scenes of the fictional and dreamy Bavarian town of Geisbach during the Prince Regent's time in 1912 were filmed in Laufen, the town hall portal by Tittmoning was redecorated as the entrance to the "Royal Bavarian District Court".

little chronicle

Laufen was first mentioned in a document in 748. The city name To run derives from castellum ad louffi ', this is the fort on the rapids (in the Salzach). Responsible for the rapids was a river rock called the "Nocken", which was also the reason for the importance of the city as a reloading point: the rapids could not be passed by ships from Salzburg upstream, the merchandise had to be unloaded, transported overland and can then be transported further down the Salzach on larger ships.

Johann Franz Michael Rottmayr

is the best-known son of the city, he is considered the most important Salzburg painter of the Baroque and one of the founders of the Austrian “imperial style”.

He was born in Laufen and was baptized here on December 10, 1654. After years of apprenticeship in Italy, he lived in Vienna from 1698 and in Salzburg from 1710-1711. Johann Michael Rottmayr died on October 25, 1730 at the age of 75 in his home in Vienna.

From today's perspective, Rottmayr's work is representative of the splendor of colors in baroque art. His most famous works are the frescoes in the collegiate church in Melk and in the Karlskirche in Vienna. Works carried out in Laufen are pictures for the Johannesspitalkirche and for the pilgrimage church of Maria Bühel. In the village there is also a high school and a street that commemorates the artist (wikipedia: Johann Michael Rottmayr).

As early as the middle of the 11th century, Laufen was a ship settlement with a trading center and salt exchange. In 1333, Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria ordered that the salt from Hallein could only be shipped by water. From then on, Laufen had a trading monopoly.

Strict guild rules regulate the life of the townspeople: Skippers are only allowed to marry with shipper families and traders only with merchant families.

1663 is a year of disaster for Laufen; a major fire destroyed almost half of the city on August 30th.

The Nocken rock in the Salzach was blown up in 1773. As a result of the secularization in Salzburg, the Rupertiwinkel with the place Laufen came provisionally from 1810 and then finally from 1816 to Bavaria. Laufen is on the outskirts of Bavaria and loses its economic importance. The construction of the railway line in 1860 made things even more difficult. The last salt transport took place in 1866, the city experienced a dramatic economic downturn, and only modern tourism brought a certain recovery.

The district of Laufen, which comprised the entire Rupertiwinkel as an administrative unit, was dissolved in 1972 in the course of the Bavarian regional reform and the southern part came with the city of Laufen to the district of Berchtesgaden.
