Background
The first established settlements date back to a period between the fifth and third centuries BC, in the following centuries the Roman domination began. The Romans who built an important communication route, called the San Maurizio road, and a large town on the shores of the lake. Following the end of the Roman Empire, the territory was subject to the barbarian hordes, which ended with the settlement of the Lombards. These were replaced by the Franks who gave way to feudalism and the medieval age. In the 15th century the territory passed to the Serenissima (Republic of Venice), in 1797 to the Cisalpine Republic and in 1815 to the Lombard Veneto Kingdom.

Points of reference are certainly, given the high bulk, the Accademia Tadini, on the lakefront, the Basilica of Valvendra, in the center. The civic tower which stands in the center of the town is also significant.

Housed in a neoclassical building, located near Piazza Garibaldi, it is one of the oldest museums in Lombardy (inaugurated in 1829). The academy contains works by Antonio Canova, Hayez, Pitocchetto and other Lombard and Venetian artists.
- 2 Sanctuary of the Saints B. Capitanio and V. Gerosa, ☎ 39 035960147. Free. every day from 7 to 12 and from 14 to 18.30. Built in the twentieth century, it is dedicated to the nuns Bartolomea Capitanio and Vincenza Gerosa who founded the congregation of the Sisters of Mary Child. Inside you can admire frescoes and mosaics made by Pasquale Arzuffi and a small museum, which tells the story and the Loverese society in which the activity of the two saints is inserted.
- 3 Basilica of S. Maria in Valvendra, Via pilgrim brothers 7. The basilica was built between 1473 and 1483 at the behest of the wool cloth merchants of Lovere. Inside you can admire the organ doors with the Annunciation painted by Floriano Ferramola and the Saints Faustino and Giovita on horseback by Alessandro Bonvicino called il Moretto, works by Gian Paolo Cavagna, Domenico Carpinoni, the altarpiece with the Assumption by Tommaso Bona, and sculptures from the Fantoni workshop.
- Monastery of Santa Chiara. Built in the 16th century, it still houses the Poor Clares.
- Oratory of San Martino. Built around the 9th century, it was abandoned in the 17th century. Thanks to a recent restoration it was possible to recover the frescoes in the apse.
