Geographical notes
Madonna di Campiglio is a winter sports center in the Alta area Val Rendena, a short distance from Campo Carlo Magno, an alpine pass between the Brenta group and Presanella, in the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park.
The pass connects the Val di Sole with the Val Rendena acting as a watershed between the Sarca and Noce streams.
From the administrative point of view Madonna di Campiglio is a fraction of the municipalities of Pinzolo and Ragoli. The latter became the municipality of Treville following the merger of the municipalities of Montagne, Preore and Ragoli, which is its capital.
Background

The first written documents that mention Madonna di Campiglio trace its foundation back to the year 1190; at that time this Raymond, in atonement for his sins, decided to found a monastery-hospice aimed at assisting the traveler. The monastery-hospice grew quickly; at the head was a prior priest. At the height of its historical parable, around 1450, it came to count 20 monks and 5 nuns and thanks to the legacies of the faithful it reached considerable wealth.
After its suppression in 1515, Campiglio began a long period of decline until 1868, when Giovanni Battista Righi, an entrepreneur from Rendena, bought the ruins from the Chapter of the Cathedral of Trento, owner until that time of what remained of the ancient institute. Trentino. With Righi - founder of the "Stabilimento Alpino", the first modern hotel in the town - Campiglio was reborn to new life. Giovanni Battista Righi also built in the two-year period 1874-75, entirely at his own expense and against the will of his contemporaries, the current "old road", the first carriage road capable of joining Campiglio with Pinzolo and the rest of the world.
Righi was succeeded by Franz Josef Oesterreicher; with the latter Campiglio became, at the end of the nineteenth century, a privileged destination of the European and Habsburg aristocracy. TheEmpress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sissi, who spent two holiday periods there, in 1889 and then in 1894. Sissi resided at the Hotel des Alpes, renting the two upper floors. On this second occasion Sissi was joined in Campiglio by her wife, the Austrian emperor Francesco Giuseppe. The first attempt to launch the resort in the world of winter sports dates back to this period; in 1910 a group of English "skiers" went up the neighbor Monte Spinale to test its skiing potential.
The first affirmation of the Trentino locality in the field of winter tourism, however, took place only after 1930, thanks to the construction of the current state road which allowed to break the isolation of the country during the cold months. The construction of the first ski lift in the town, the "Belvedere toboggan", dates back to 1936, followed in 1937 by the ski lift Campo Carlo Magno-Spinale. Between 1938 and 1942 Campiglio was also the seat of the "littoriali della neve e del ice". The winter tourist season for Campiglio became a consolidated reality, however, only after the fifties, which saw the affirmation of mass tourism and the arrival of skiers attracted by the slopes of the Spinale, Pradalago, 5 Laghi and Grostè.
