With the Val di Rabbi and the Val di Peio it forms a homogeneous tourist and administrative district.
The name has no relation to the Sun as a star or with any ancient solar cults. The etymology of the toponym Sol it probably goes back to the Celtic divinity of the waters Sulis that the Romans identified with Minerva. This would be corroborated by the existence still today in the valley, a Peio it's at Rabbi, of sources of thermal waters. These sources are considered therapeutic for the relief provided against any type of malaise, being, in fact, rich in sulfur and carbon with diuretic, blood and lymphatic effects.
Geographical notes
Val di Sole is located in the north-western part of Trentino, along the high course of the river Noce. The valley is surrounded by several mountain groups and alpine chains of great importance: the group Ortles-Cevedale to the north, the group of Brenta to the south and theAdamello-Presanella West; these are the main mountain ranges that enclose the verdant valley. On the course of the Noce there are several smaller streams and streams such as the Meledrio, the Vermigliana, Noce Bianco, Rabbiés. Its tributary valleys are Val di Rabbi is Val di Peio. From 1 January 2016 the municipalities of Dimaro and Monclassico merged into a single administrative body which took the name of Dimaro Folgarida and has 2,132 inhabitants.

Val di Sole can be reached via the following roads:
- State road 42 del Tonal and the Mendola which connects it with Lombardy (Val Camonica) through the Tonale Pass or with Bolzano through the Mendola Pass;
- State road 239 of Campiglio which connects it with Madonna di Campiglio (Val Rendena) through the Campo Carlo Magno Pass;
- State road 43 of the Val di Non which, after having gone up the Val di Non, joins the State Road 42 of Tonal and Mendola near Ponte di Mostizzolo
On the train
- Trento-Malé-Marilleva railway line: inaugurated in 1964, it goes up from Trento to replace the pre-existing tramway that crosses the entire Val di Non and goes up the Val di Sole reaching the capital Bad. In 2003 the route was extended to the tourist resort of Marilleva, completing the Dolomiti Express = Ski Train project.

Daolasa or Marilleva, in the heart of Val di Sole, are places made known by the numerous international sporting events and activities related to the world of mountain biking (downhill, cross country, four-cross) in summer. These are also the starting point for large ski areas, in fact thanks to the cable-rail intermodal station of Daolasa you can get directly to the ski slopes of Folgarida-Marilleva also by train and from here you can reach the ski resorts of Madonna of Campiglio is Pinzolo for a total of 150 km of slopes served by 63 cableways.
