Dimaro Folgarida is a municipality of the Trentino Alto Adige.

To know

The municipality was established on 1 January 2016 by merging the municipalities of Dimaro and Monclassico.

Geographical notes

The town of Dimaro, the municipal seat, is located on the road junction of the Val di Sole with the Campo Carlo Magno Pass and Madonna of Campiglio. In recent times, the narrow-gauge railway that connects the Valle di Sole with the capital of Trento has opened a station near the town (Dimaro-Pressòn station), which thus also qualifies as a railway hub. The town therefore controls the gateway from the Valle di Sole to the Brenta mountain group and al Adamello-Brenta Natural Park through the Meledrio Valley.

It is 5 km from Bad, 20 from Madonna of Campiglio, 20 from Cles, 26 from Passo del Tonale, 38 from Wooden bridge, 60 from Trento.

Background

The origins of Dimaro are shrouded in the documentary silence that accompanies the centuries of the early Middle Ages and only at the beginning of the 13th century did the names of the first inhabitants of the small mountain community begin to appear. Carciato, a town bordering that of Dimaro and separated from it by the Meledrio stream, also has ancient origins and boasts a history that spans many centuries. Only the inhabited area of Folgàrida, attested on the conoid on which the road that leads to the Campo Carlo Magno pass and to Madonna of Campiglio, is a recent settlement, since it was born in 1965, on a winter tourist settlement project wanted by the administrators of the time.

Dimaro and Carciato have been for centuries (certainly from 1200 onwards) single neighborhoods or universitates, within the institutional nexus of the episcopal principality of Trento. Economic life was concentrated above all in the breeding of livestock and in the exploitation of the land (agriculture) and the forest (forestry). The trade was not very important, even if it was quite widespread a local handicraft, called to supply the essential tools for daily life. Typical of Dimaro were the caràdori, which was responsible for transporting the timber from the woods to the sawmills. A small industrial district was located along the Meledrio stream, with mills, sawmills, hammers, limestone, huts and places dedicated to the production of charcoal.

With the political end of the episcopal principality, followed by the intricate Napoleonic events and the Congress of Vienna, these countries also became part of the Princely County of Tyrol, territorial administrative area of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the First World War they had to suffer all the consequences of the mass conscription against Serbia and the subsequent presence of an active front a few tens of kilometers away, on the Passo del Tonale, direct line of confrontation between the Empire of Austria and the Kingdom of Italy.

In 1965 a strong planning action carried out by both the public body and private capital led to the birth and entry into operation of the winter - summer tourist resort of Folgàrida, which today represents one of the main drivers of the local economy. Following the consultative referendum of 14 December 2014, the municipalities of Dimaro and Monclassico merged into the new municipality of Dimaro Folgarida with effect from 1 January 2016.
