Carisolo is a center of the Trentino Alto Adige.

To know

For many years it has been a destination for summer tourism for families, and its proximity to Pinzolo and its ski resorts, located halfway between the two centers, has favored its receptive development even in winter.

Geographical notes

Carisolo is located in the Trentino area in the north of the Val Rendena, where it practically forms a conurbation with Pinzolo. At the entrance of Val Genova, a tributary valley of Val Rendena, its territory is included in Adamello-Brenta Natural Park. It is 60 km away. from Trento and 105 from Brescia.

Background

The town derives its name from the Sedge (Latin carex), a plant that proliferated in the area; hence the Carezol with which the country is indicated in a document of 1484.The history of Carisolo does not present particular events, except for the passage of Charlemagne who passed through it during his trip to Italy from Bergamo to Val Camonica to Val Rendena. The journey, which some consider legendary, is remembered by the two large frescoes that one of the Baschenis left in the church of Santo Stefano.

It is said that Charlemagne, on his passage, had some forts demolished and ordered to build churches in their place; one of these would be Santo Stefano, isolated outside the town on a promontory overlooking the Sarca.

  • 1 Church of Santo Stefano. A tradition, which is not known how much history and how much legend is, tells that Charlemagne made a journey from Bergamo in Val Camonica, and moving from village to village and church to church, through the Val di Sole he arrived in Val Rendena. The small church of Santo Stefano, isolated on a cliff overlooking the town, surrounded by its cemetery, remembers and hands down the event with a fresco preserved inside. Charlemagne is depicted with seven bishops, many soldiers and many church figures.
In the second part of the fresco, below the first representation, his journey in Val Camonica and in this area of Trentino is narrated. The emperor left a vivid memory in the people of the valley; it can be understood from the fact that many churches located on the route of this journey of Charlemagne are dedicated to Saints to whom the Emperor was particularly attached; to Madonna of Campiglio also there is still a site called Campo Carlo Magno.

The fresco in question is attributed to the Baschenis, a family of itinerant painters from Bergamo who have left numerous works in Trentino and in Val Rendena, for example in the church of San Vigilio, also cemetery, a Pinzolo, or in that of Sant'Antonio Abate a Pelugo.

The church of Santo Stefano was founded in the fourteenth century. The remaking of the sixteenth century has left the building its rustic character which is well linked with the isolated position, on a rocky promontory overlooking the valley at the bottom of which the Sarca flows, in an environmental context of wild beauty.
Santo Stefano gives the visitor, like San Vigilio in Pinzolo, a series of frescoes by Simone Baschenis who in 1519 also depicted a Macabre dance; the series of Seven Deadly Sins as well as episodes from the life of Santo Stefano. Simone II Baschenis frescoed an interesting one in Santo Stefano Last Supper and Saints
  • 2 Parish church of San Nicolò. Built in the first half of the eighteenth century, it stands out high above the houses of the town. From the square below you go up to the church with a flight of 100 steps. On the facade there is the portrait of San Nicola, while on the side facing the underlying houses of the town there is a sundial. It has a single nave with four side altars in imitation marble and in Baroque style. The high altar in polychrome wood in Baroque Rococo style is of great value.
  • Minighina house. It is an ancient construction of the fifteenth century located near the parish church, and was intended as a place of worship, a use testified by a granite stoup and the remains of a fresco depicting the Madonna and Child, St. Nicholas and another unidentifiable figure; some believe that this building was the ancient nucleus of the church.
  • Hermitage of San Martin. On the slopes of the Lancia peak, at 1226 meters above sea level, the Hermitage of San Martino is an ancient hermitage destination for excursions by mountaineers since the second half of the seventeenth century. Its existence is linked to numerous popular legends that tell of treasures, of a hermit, of monsters, of a bear protecting the hermit. It was restored at the end of the nineteenth century, then again in the twentieth century. It can be achieved with the red trail; from there you can enjoy a splendid view over the Val Rendena.
  • Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Power. This is how this small sanctuary is commonly called, the official title of which is the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Help of Christians. The building has incorporated a sixteenth-century aedicule existing here and now walled up to the right of the main altar. Built between 1804 and 1825, the building has simple lines.

  • 3 Val Genova. The Val di Genova is a narrow valley that has kept its nature intact thanks to the lack of inhabited centers. It is surrounded by the high peaks of the Carè Alto (3,283 m.), Mandrone (3,283 m.) And Cima Presanella (3,556 m.) Mountains. Rich in waters, it is crossed by the Sarca di Val Genova and is characterized by Nardis Falls whose waters divided into two arms make a jump of over 130 meters; other waterfalls are those of Lares and those of Mataròt. The locality Ragada groups farms and huts still used today that formed a small village used by peasants for summer pastures. In 1951 a small church was built there where every summer the Ragada Festival; in its bell tower the bell of the ancient bell tower of Strembo has been placed.
In the upper valley there are rest shelters. The Bedole refuge, at 1,641 meters above sea level, can be reached by car or by the shuttle service of the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park; the Città di Trento refuge (also called Mandrone at 2,424 meters high) is the last stop before the Mandrone glacier. In the last part of the wooded path you are struck by the quantity of mountain flowers, such as martagon lilies, rhododendrons, and finally the edelweiss on the rocks.
Beyond the Mandrone refuge the nature trail Marchetti leads to the Lobbia Alta refuge dedicated to the Fallen of the Adamello at 3,040 meters, after having crossed the Adamello glacier. This place is known to the general public for having been the scene of the meeting between John Paul II and the Italian president Sandro Pertini in 1985. In 1988 the Pope rotated there to bless the granite altar that was erected in his honor; the nearby Cresta Croce on 31 December 1999 became Punta Giovanni Paolo II.
In addition to the richness of the vegetation, the Val Genova, included in Adamello-Brenta Natural Park it is richly populated by many animal species. Before the establishment of the Park, Val Genova was the only Alpine valley where very few specimens of Brown bear, whose population is currently recovering. The valley, so rich in water, also has a series of lakes: Mandrone, Frozen, Round, Dark is Preséna.
