Background

Evidence on the human presence in the Baldo and Nago area dates back to the Neolithic. Also for the Bronze Age and the protohistoric and historical eras the presence of settlements is confirmed on the cliff of Castel Penede in Nago, castle in a strategic position destroyed by the French troops of the Duke of Vendôme in 1703.The territory, which since the 11th century was part of the Episcopal Principality of Trento, was conquered militarily by the Venetians in 1439. In that year the Venetians transported, through the Valle del Cameràs, an entire fleet (25 barges and 6 galleys) with the operation Galeas for montes: they left the Adriatic and going up the Adige river reached the river port of Ravazzone. From here, by force of arms and oxen they passed through He died until you reach the waters of the Loppio lake. Through the "Bocca" of Nagofinally, they were lowered into the Garda in Torbole. A gigantic undertaking that remained in the history of the navies: about 2000 oxen and 15,000 ducats were used to carry out this military operation. After a defeat in 1439, in April 1440 the small Venetian fleet defeated, in the waters of the Garda, the Visconti fleet led by Taliano Furlano, managing to conquer Riva del Garda. The Venetian domination lasted until 1509 when Torbole with Nago he returned to the Episcopal Principality of Trento.

After the Napoleonic invasion in 1796 and brief memberships to the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Kingdom of Italy, Torbole as well as the whole Trentino was incorporated into the Austrian Empire. The country, like the others in the area, was completely evacuated during the war of 1915-1918: it was in fact right on the front line of the Austro-Italian conflict. In 1919 it became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

During the Second World War it was annexed to the Third Reich, together with the whole region Trentino Alto Adige and the province of Belluno, and in its galleries in the eastern Garda area, Messerschmitt AG industries were set up for the Luftwaffe, the German Air Force (parts for V2 rockets were also produced). agriculture and fishing and the entry into the tourism enterprise of a large part of the population.

What see

  • Church of Sant'Andrea. Dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen, the church is located above the town of Torbole. The first mention of the chapel of S.Andrea is in a document of 1175. It is also mentioned in a document of 1183 by Pope Lucius III. It was rebuilt in the late Baroque style after the devastation by French troops in 1703, but earlier architectural elements were recovered, as evidenced by the dates 1496 and 1512 carved on the base of the two stone arches of the transept.
The altarpiece in the apse depicts the Martyrdom of St. Andrew, by the Veronese painter Giambettino Cignaroli (1706-1770). The various figures in the painting, very precise and realistic, seem to have been made using different commoners of Torbole as models.
In the two side aisles there are two wooden statues, of S. Giuseppe and of the so-called Romani Madonna, named after the benefactor who donated it.
  • Valletta of S. Lucia. The valley connected the ancient Roman road active until the early eighteenth century Adige valley with the Lake Garda. It winds through a centenary olive grove. It was the scene of the descent of the small Venetian fleet. Along its path the view dominates the entire Lake Garda, up to Sirmione.
  • 1 Cantilever panoramic path towards Tempesta. It is a recently built nature trail, with a balcony overlooking Lake Garda, which connects Torbole to its hamlet Tempesta, an ancient border between Austria is Italy. The walk is 4 km long, and proceeds halfway up Monte Baldo overlooking the lake, passing two ridges, the "Corno di Bò" and the "Salt de la Cavra". However, it is not suitable for mountain biking. The journey time on foot is approximately one hour and 15 minutes. Busatte trail on Wikipedia Busatte trail (Q56258836) on Wikidata

Now it is possible, on foot or by bicycle, to cover the whole Upper Garda Trentino, starting from the east of Torbole to the west of Riva del Garda, along the lake. Where to eat

The local gastronomic tradition is based on some typical elements of Trentino's poor cuisine, such as polenta and game. The proximity of the lake, however, has enriched the tables of Torbole with very tasty fish such as, among many others, salmon trout, pike, whitefish and perch. The mild climate then favored the cultivation of the olive tree (perhaps the northernmost in Italy). Among the fruit, figs, plums, peaches, introduced thanks to the favorable microclimate, and apples. quite popular broccoli. Typical recipes are:

  • the Bigoi with the aole (Spaghettini with sardines; protagonists of a carnival festival in Torbole called Bewildered);
