To know

Two valleys are included in the community: the Basso Sarca, occupied precisely by the final stretch of the Sarca river, the territory with the lowest altitude in Trentino (about 70 m asl at the lake) and the Val di Ledro, which rises at an higher altitude (from 600 meters upwards).

Geographical notes

Includes the area thirty of the territories gardesani with the two valleys of the lower Sarca and the neighboring one Ledro Valley; among its municipalities are also included Arch is Riva del Garda, respectively fourth and fifth largest inhabited center of Trentino: both amount to around 15,000 inhabitants. Riva is the capital city.

The territory borders to the west and north with the Giudicarie Valleys, to the east with the Val d'Adige and the Vallagarina, to the south with the Garda areas of the Lombardy he was born in Veneto.

When to go

The Garda area enjoys a semi-Mediterranean microclimate, being protected by the mountains behind it, having a rather low altitude and being able to count on the lake to regulate temperature changes. Even the Ledro area partly enjoys this climate, despite the high altitude and the most abundant rainfall, thanks to the presence of Ledro lake; in general, in the valleys of the Alto Garda and Ledro communities, the climate is transitional between the south and the continental: winter is more rigid and summer cooler. The area is rather windy due to theNow del Garda, one of the nine local winds. The other eight Garda refolas are: Pelèr, Ponàl, Bali, Ander, Vinosa, Gardesana, Visentina and Fasanella.

Background

The Roman presence is attested since the first century BC, in fact seen from above the territory between Riva and Arco meets the criteria of the Greco-Roman city consisting of a thistle and many decumani intertwined in a cross.

During the Austrian administration, Alto Garda and Basso Sarca became an important therapeutic center; in Arco as well as in Ecchen there is still a sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie where in Lent the offspring of the Habsburg aristocracy came to be treated for consumption.

Its economy was once traditionally based on fishing and agriculture; nowadays, except for the presence of some important industries, especially paper mills, it relies mainly on tourism. The strong winds have favored the birth of a rather well-known sailing and windsurfing tradition at an international level (in fact, numerous regattas are held, including high level ones), and the mountain panorama has allowed the development of mountain biking in recent years. The main flow comes from the German areas, in which the area is famous as the first warm climate encountered when descending towards Italy. We still remember, however, the ciuaroi ', the Ledro blacksmiths who produced the broche that is, the spiked mountain shoes.
