To know

With Torbole constitutes the Municipality of Nago-Torbole, in the area Alto Garda and Ledro.

Geographical notes

Monte Altissimo and a view of Lake Garda

A short distance from the banks of the Lake Garda, the town develops on the slopes of Monte Altissimo di Nago on the mountains behind Torbole.

Background

Evidence on the human presence dates back to the Neolithic (in the Baldo and Nago area). Also for the Bronze Age and the protohistoric and historical eras the presence of settlements is confirmed on the cliff of Castel Penede in Nago, a castle in a strategic position destroyed by the French troops of the Duke of Vendôme in 1703.

The territory of Nago-Torbole, which since the 11th century was part of the Episcopal Principality of Trento, was conquered militarily by the Venetians in 1439. In that year the Venetians transported, through the Valle del Cameràs, an entire fleet (25 barges and 6 galleys) with the operation Galeas for montes: they left the Adriatic and going up the Adige river reached the river port of Ravazzone. From here, by force of arms and oxen they passed through He died until you reach the waters of the Loppio lake. Finally, through the "Bocca" of Nago, they were lowered into Garda to Torbole. A gigantic undertaking that remained in the history of the navies: about 2000 oxen and 15,000 ducats were used to carry out this military operation. After a defeat in 1439, in April 1440 the small Venetian fleet defeated, in the waters of the Garda, the Visconti fleet led by Taliano Furlano, managing to conquer Riva del Garda. The Venetian domination lasted until 1509 when Nago and Torbole returned to the Episcopal Principality of Trento.

After the Napoleonic invasion in 1796 and brief memberships to the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Kingdom of Italy, Nago as all the Trentino was incorporated into the Austrian Empire. Nago, like the other towns in the area, was completely evacuated during the war of 1915-1918: it was in fact right on the front line of the Austro-Italian conflict. In 1919 it became part of the Kingdom of Italy.

During the Second World War it was annexed to the Third Reich, together with the whole region Trentino Alto Adige and the province of Belluno, and in its galleries in the eastern Garda area, Messerschmitt AG factories were set up for the Luftwaffe, the German Air Force (parts for V2 rockets were also produced there).

What see

  • Austro-Hungarian forts. The Austro-Hungarian forts of Nago are perhaps the best preserved of Trentino. Today they house the municipal museum. The history of these fortifications begins on December 21, 1859, when the construction project of the high fort of Nago was approved by the Ministry in Vienna. The construction took place between 1 June 1860 and 5 January 1861. The testing took place in 1863.
The fort of Nago belongs to the "first generation" as, for example, the fort of San Nicolò a shore, in well-worked stone with material found in the area (yellow of He died for the upper forte and pink for the lower one.
It consisted of two casemates placed across the road which was barred with a door. Today beautifully restored, they are accessible to all.
  • Giants' pots. The Giants' pots they are a postglacial phenomenon among the most interesting natural phenomena of Trentino. They are glacial wells, some of which can be visited (those located along the state road below the town). Another group is visible along the Maza road about one kilometer from Nago.
  • Parish church of San Vigilio. The current construction dates back to the end of the 16th century, but the first place of worship probably dates back to the early Christian era. It was mentioned for the first time in 1203, in a document relating to a dispute between the inhabitants of Nago and the bishop of Trento Corrado II of Beseno. It is called "collegiate", so its importance at the time must have been considerable.
During the pastoral visit of 1536 the episcopal envoys invited the inhabitants of the town to rebuild the church; the works ended in 1599 and the orientation of the nave was changed, with the apse to the west and the entrance to the east, contrary to tradition. The interior is sober, with eighteenth-century marble altars; in addition to the main altar (1741), there are those dedicated to Santo Stefano (1766-68), to the Virgin of the Rosary (1736), to Santa Teresa di Lisieux (1756 (once dedicated to the Immaculate Conception) by Francesco Zuliani and Sant'Antonio di Padova (1718); the latter houses an altarpiece by Bortolo Tomasini depicting the Saint with the Virgin and Child. This painter is also the author of the Via Crucis. Between 1920 and 1921 the Roman painter Giustiniani he created the only wall paintings in the church depicting the 12 apostles enclosed in medallions on the vault of the building.
After the Second World War, given the high number of faithful, the building was enlarged with the construction of the transept, assuming the shape of a Latin cross that it still maintains today.
  • Church of the Holy Trinity. Built in the 17th century, it was the seat of a brotherhood. Inside there is the main altar, built in marble, on which is placed a valuable wooden sculpture depicting the Trinity, the work of a Tyrolean sculptor of the fifteenth century. The side altars, with a 17th century wooden altarpiece and a marble antependium from the first years of the following century, are dedicated to San Carlo Borromeo and San Francesco d'Assisi, depicted in two 17th century altarpieces. On the cymatium of the first of the two there is the coat of arms of the noble Tonelli family, very generous towards the church. In the building there is also a 19th century painting depicting the Madonna dell'Aiuto.
  • Penede Castle. The ruins of Castel Penede (under restoration) are located in a strategic position, just above the two villages of Nago and Torbole.
Rebuilt around 1200 on Neolithic and then Roman and Celtic sediments, it was a fief of the Counts of Arch and it was long disputed in the wars between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. In 1438 it was conquered by the Gattamelata troops. In 1703 it was sacked and set on fire by the French troops of the Duke of Vendôme.

Where to eat

The local gastronomic tradition is based on some typical elements of the Trentino cuisine, such as polenta and game. The proximity of the lake, however, has enriched the tables of Nago with very tasty fish such as, among many others, salmon trout, pike, whitefish and perch. The mild climate then favored the cultivation of the olive tree (perhaps the northernmost in Italy), including fruit, figs, plums, peaches, introduced thanks to the favorable microclimate, and apples. Torbole it also remembers a rather popular broccoli.Typical recipes are:

  • the Bigoi with the aole (Spaghettini with sardines; protagonists of a carnival festival in Torbole called Bewildered);
  • the Zisam (lake aole and onions);
  • there Peverada with luganeghe and polenta (There Peverada it is a very tasty sauce made with bread);
