Modigliana is a city ofEmilia Romagna.

To know

It is one of the municipalities of the Tuscan Romagna, that is the area of Romagna that belonged for some centuries to the Tuscany, until in 1923 it was aggregated to the province of Forlì.

Background

The city rises in the locality where, according to Muratori, the Roman was Castrum mutilum mentioned by Tito Livio. It is mentioned since the 9th century in documents as being part of the exarchate of Ravenna. It was the seat of the Counts Guidi since Tegrimo Guidi married Countess Ingelrada, daughter of Martino Duke of Ravenna in the 10th century.

In 1271, with the mediation of the mayor and the captain of the people of Forlì, respectively Brandalisio and Filippo di Paolo Ligapasseri, the Guidi counts sign pacts with the community of Modigliana, thus officially recognizing the birth of the municipality.

Subsequently the city came under the influence of the Republic of Florence: it first depended on the Florentine lordship and then on the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. From 1510 it was an independent podestà, from 1772 the seat of the vicariate. During the French period it was the seat of a sub-prefecture in the Arno department; in 1838 it was declared a "noble city".

With the unification of Italy (1861) it was included in the district of Rocca San Casciano, part of the Province of Florence. In 1923 the entire district passed to the Province of Forlì, of which Modigliana is still part.

On May 30, 1940, by decree of the Head of Government, it was awarded the title of City.

What see

Rocca dei Conti Guidi under the snow
  • 1 Fortress of the Guidi counts (Roccaccia). The fortress dominates the town. In 896 the countess Ingelrada gave Modigliana to her son Pietro, deacon of Ravenna. In 925 the castle of Modigliana is subject to Ingelrada II, daughter of the Duke Martino of Ravenna. In the 10th century Guido, progenitor of the Guidi counts, was made count palatine by the emperor Otto I of Saxony and received from them the Modigliana countryside in Romagna.
In 1164 the emperor Frederick I Barbarossa confirmed to Guido Guerra the possession of the castle of Modigliana, which two years later hosted the emperor Frederick I Barbarossa with the empress, who gave birth to a son called Corrado.
In 1278 Modigliana was besieged by the Florentines; in 1362 Fiore di Guido di Domestico of the Guidi da Modigliana counts goes to Florence with its castles, among which there is also that of Modigliana which in 1377 submits to Florence and following this event the latter imposed the construction of a third wall (in addition to the first, not far from the fortress, and the second, intermediate) several miles long and equipped with 12 towers that ends with an imposing gate, that is the Grandstand overlooking the Tramazzo river. In 1415 Modigliana became a first grade castle house in the Florentine district. In 1440 the castle of Modigliana was taken by the troops of Guidantonio Manfredi who obtained the donation from the Visconti family.
In 1445 Florence returns to the possession of the castle of Modigliana. In 1502 Vitellozzo Vitelli conquered the castle of Modigliana and sacked it.
Subsequently the loss of the military function, the earthquake of 1661, followed by other strong shocks in 1773, determined its abandonment. In 1918 there was the great collapse of part of the circular keep, which resulted in a vertical section.
  • 2 Praetorian palace. Dating back to the fourteenth century, it is located in the homonymous square in the center of the village, and was first owned by the Counts Guidi in 1377 and then the seat of the Florentine Podestà and Praetor, sent by the city of Florence every year for the administration of the country. The coats of arms and inscriptions on the outside testify to the succession over time of the various Powers. The architecture is typical of the fourteenth-century Florentine palaces, with exposed stone faces and imposingly thick walls: in evidence, the arched ceiling on the ground floor and the terracotta tile floors. Following the earthquakes, the building was lowered, and the original appearance has changed over time, the central part was once higher than a floor and had the typical battlements. In 1896, the openings were bricked up and two wings were added, the windows now buffered are still recognizable. The main entrance was in via Vaiani, and today it corresponds to the Pinacoteca.
  • 3 Silvestro Lega Picture Gallery. The Pinacoteca dedicated to the great master of the 'Macchia' Silvestro Lega, born in Modigliana, is divided into four fundamental groups: the paintings by Silvestro Lega (with portraits of Garibaldi, Mazzini, Don Giovanni Verità); the works from the Lega prize; paintings acquired by the Municipality of Modigliana, and the donation, dating back to 1959, by Michele Campana of another group of paintings.
From the central nucleus dedicated to the League, "genius loci", from which the art gallery inherits its identity and historical legitimacy, other artistic presences branch out, which although belonging to different periods and currents, find a common dialogue within the museum, such as place of cultural and historical awareness. Therefore the nucleus of the Campana donation reveals a particular interest in the Impressionist tradition, within a figurative art of purely Tuscan and Emilia-Romagna connotation, with artists such as Annibale Gatti, Gino Barbieri, Domenico Baccarini, Armando Spadini etc.
In the works from the Lega Prize, the avant-garde movements of the 1950s and 1960s, Abstract Art, Abstract Expressionism, with Alviani, Pozzati and Plinio Mesciulam are documented.
The last section, on the other hand, presents paintings donated or acquired by the Municipality, among which the portrait of “I swimmer” by Francesco Nonni is of particular interest.
