Etymology
Some linguists believe the name to be a derivative of Germanic mundgawi ("Protection of the territory") which would have been incorrectly translated by Latin Mons gaudii ("Mount of joy").
However, the first written evocation dating from 1198 is Mons loci which in Latin means "Mount of this place" and seems to contradict the first hypothesis. In 1217, we find Munioie and in 1226 Monjoje. At XVe and at XVIe century, it is called Monjoye then becomes Montjoie in 1795 during the annexation of its territory in the French department ofOurthe. However prussian since 1815, its name will not be Germanized, by official decree until 1918 in Monschau, based on his name in francique ripuaireMontche.
Story
From a geological point of view, Monschau is located to the west of theEifel which is mainly made up of volcanic rocks formed during theEifelian.
At Ier century BC AD, Montjoie is at the eastern limit of the territory of Eburons and far from any human habitat. From 19 BC. AD, the Romans moved the Ubiens from the right bank of the Rhine to the left bank up to the limit of the plateau of High Fens. TO 33 km in great circle distance from the historic city of Monschau, the vicus ofIcorigium is then founded along the Roman road from Trier to Cologne. Over time, other pathways are created by Pepinides and their successors Carolingians. So a road connects Aachen To Trier passing through the current municipality of Monschau, and more precisely through Konzen. It is there, at the place called Hardhof where it is also the Saint-Pancrace chapel, than Lothair Ier sets up one of its 43 royal farms.
We must wait until the end of XIe century or the beginning of the XIIe century for a human habitat to materialize elsewhere, with the Richvinstinne castle first and, about a century later, the Haller tower then the Montjoie castle at the foot of which the historic city will be established.
The second half of the XIVe century will see Montjoie and its surroundings change hands and pass, by purchase, from Duchy of Limburg to Duchy of Juliers.

The year 1543 saw the small historic city looted and practically destroyed by the army of Charles Quint while the castle of the dukes is heavily damaged by the artillery and its garrison forced to surrender. The integration, in 1622, of the Duchy of Juliers into that of Palatinate-Neuburg and its relative distance from the theaters of conflicts generated by the Thirty Years' War marks the beginning of the development for the city of Montjoie: recognition of the status of city, construction of an elementary school as well as, with Sankt Mariä Gebur in 1650, a second parish church and, in 1654, a town hall. It is also from this period that dates the establishment, by the Montjolians themselves, of a production of ironwork and, especially from the beginning of the XVIIIe century of woolen fabrics whether in Imgenbroich with the Offermann family or even in Monschau with the Schmitz, Schlösser, Troistorff families (the Troistorff House) and, above all, to Johann Heinrich Scheibler, the builder of the Red house, then to his sons Bernhard Georg, Paul Christoph (the Pauls’sches House), Johann Ernst and Wilhelm.
The annexation, in 1794, of the entire left bank of the Rhine, and therefore of Montjoie, to the French Republic put a brake on the cloth industry by the loss of all the markets located across the Rhine. However, from the very beginning of the XIXe century, mechanization and modernization of techniques gave new impetus to industry until the incorporation, in 1815 by Prussia, of Montjoie in the Grand Duchy of Bas-Rhin. Not only, the French and United Kingdom of the Netherlands become inaccessible but within the Kingdom of Prussia, customs barriers exist. These facts pushed, from 1820, many clothiers to exile towards the east, in particular towards Łódź. In 1860, Montjoie had only eight factories and, in 1908, the last, that of Louis Scheibler Sohn, closed its doors.
In autumn 1918, feeling defeat approaching, the Emperor of Germany William II hastened, just before his abdication, to sign several decrees including that, by francophobia according to some, modifying the official name of Montjoie into that of Monschau.
Without any strategic importance, the city of Monschau will be spared the fighting and bombing during the Second World War. Even if one of the components of the 6. Panzerarmee started there German counter offensive of December 1944 on the Imgenbroich plateau, it bypassed the historic city bearing held by elements of the 2e infantry division American.
During the reform of municipal territories carried out from 1967 to 1974 in West Germany, The city of Monschau integrated, in 1972, the former municipalities of Höfen, Imgenbroich, Kalterherberg, Konzen, Mützenich and Rohren to form the new municipality (Gemeinde) of Monschau while keeping its title of city.

By train
Going to Monschau by train is not an easy option. The nearest stations are at Eupen (20 km), Hellenthal (22 km) and Heimbach (26 km). From Eupen station, you will have direct access to the TEC bus no 385 but it only runs on Saturdays and Sundays. From the other two stations, you will have to get off the train at the station of Gemünd (on the OTB link with Hellenthal as its terminus) and take 2 different buses while from Heimbach, you will need to take 3 different buses.
By car
Montjoie being quite far from the European motorway network, it can be a bit complicated to get there. To reach the historic city from Koblenz, count 1 h 50 of road including 69 km by a winding journey on ordinary roads in perfect condition. From Malmedy, count 40 min for an equally torturous journey of 29 km.

In the historic city
It is very difficult to travel by car and certain periods are prohibited for the circulation of motor vehicles not equipped with a "Monschau-Karte". it is preferable to go directly to one of the four parking areas surrounding the city and to continue on foot towards the center or to take the city bus if you are parked in the “Burgau” car park. If you have no change, the three paid parking areas, which each have spaces reserved for PMR, are equipped with terminals allowing payment via a mobile phone.
If you are walking, which is the best way to discover and appreciate the place, know that all roads, including sidewalks where they exist, are covered with sandstone paving stones. So avoid shoes with stiletto heels. When the ground is wet, be careful not to slip and fall, especially if you are on a bicycle.

Outside the historic city
The road network is, like most of the time in Germany, in perfect condition and the German driver generally respects the highway code scrupulously. Traffic is usually fluid even at peak times except when organizing the Vennlauf and marathon where deviations can be set up. A small downside, there are only two service stations for the entire town, so take your precautions:
- 9 Total Trierer Straße 232 – All types of fuel, payment in cash (from 6 h To 22 h), by maestro or by credit card. Store, car wash.
- 10 Aral Hauptstraße 144 – All types of fuel, payment in cash (from 7 h To 21 h), by maestro or by credit card. Store, car wash.
If you are a gentle user, the paths and paths are numerous, well maintained, often marked out and even provided with benches to spare a small stopover. So do not hesitate to borrow them, because they will save you the distance to cover far from the roads for cars. Only a few very short sections to go from the plateau to the Roer valley and vice versa can present a significant difference in level.

- Historic city of Monschau – Although Monschau was one of the starting points of theoffensive von Rundstedt in , the historic city center was spared throughout the two World Wars and kept its aspect of XVIIIe century with many half-timbered or slate-covered houses and its narrow streets remained almost unchanged since. Apart from the two old castles and the religious buildings, nearly 200 buildings are classified as monument (Denkmal) speak Land of North Rhine-Westphalia making this historic city a very popular tourist attraction. (for PMR sporty, the access path has many stairs). Of uncertain origin, it was long considered that it was built with the aim of being a watchtower of the castle of the Dukes of Juliers, but we now know that this is not the case and that, serving as residence and defense in the manner of a strong house, with walls of 2.5 meters thick, it is older than the castle. A watercolor dated 1543 shows the tower still topped with a double roof. rumps straight. On the other hand, from 1570, many of its stones were used to restore the castle of the Juliers, as well as all the illustrations of the XVIIe century and later show a roofless ruin.

(except the interior of the towers and surrounding walls). Built at the end of XIIe century or early XIIIe century by the duke Waléran III of Limbourg, the castle is cited for the first time as Castrum in Munioie in a document of 1217. During the second half of the XIVe century, it became the property of the Duke William VI of Juliers which enlarged it and transformed it into a fortress with powerful ramparts with ramparts. From 1433, Adolphe Ier from Juliers having consolidated his property on Montjoie, the castle became one of the residences of the dukes until 1609 and the death of Jean-Guillaume de Clèves, the Duchy of Juliers then being integrated into the Duchy of Palatinate-Neuburg. In the meantime, the castle had to undergo, in 1543, a siege by the artillery of Charles Quint which brought about its surrender and the looting of the city. Became French national property in 1795, it was sold but the new owner, being unable to maintain this immense property, had the roofs dismantled between 1836 and 1837 in order to be exempt from property tax. We will have to wait for the start of XXe century so that the new owner, the provincial government of Rhineland, is working to consolidate and restore the castle and its outbuildings. After the First World War, the Deutsches Jugendherbergswerk set up a youth hostel, the DJH Burg Monschau, in the west wing. Currently, in addition to a youth hostel, the castle also serves as a backdrop for the classical music festival. The interior courtyard, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city, as well as the ramparts are accessible free of charge at all times.

It was in 1136 that the duke Waléran II of Limburg donates his castle of Richvinstinne to theorder of Premonstratensian which transforms it into a priory. Completely destroyed in 1543 by mercenary troops from Mary of Hungary during the wars for the possession of Duchy of Gelderland, the monastery will be rebuilt little by little until 1693, date of the completion of the church. In 1714, the priory acquired its independence and became an abbey. in 1802, the monastery was dissolved following the secularization desired by Napoleon Banaparte and the property was leased as a farm and then sold in 1808 to a fabric manufacturer. Current buildings, only the northeast wing, that is to say, the priory, the church, the former refectory-dormitory adjoining it to the north as well as the vast fish pond, are of XVIIe century; the other wings date from XIXe century. Since 2008, Benedictine monks occupy and manage the domain of 32 hectares.

Have a drink / Go out

Apart from the case, common in Germany, of pick-pocketing especially during the tourist season or during the Christmas market, there is no security problem specific to the municipality. The phenomenon of verbal or even physical racial aggression, common in large German cities, has not reached more rural areas like Montjoie.
If you are in the wild and need help, fill in the number of the last junction point (knotenpunkt) that you have encountered and, if possible, go there to help the emergency services locate you. In the Eifel national park, most information boards have a number at the top right; it is the latter that you can fill in.
The organization of the police in Germany can be quite confusing for a foreigner. Thus the only police station for the whole municipality is in thecity Hall and is not accessible, even by phone at 39 2473 957712680, that the Mon. : 10 h - 11 h and the Game. : 17 h - 19 h. The closest police station is that of Schleiden, or a few 24 km by the road to the historic city. The latter can be contacted at 39 2445 8580.
In forest areas, the forest guards of the water and forest administration, recognizable from afar by their hats "Four-humps », Are empowered to enforce the law and are trained to give first aid.
Respect
On the road, the Germans respect the code and more especially the speed limits. Do like them or they'll be sure to let you know, one way or another, that they're not happy. Do not throw anything on the ground and more particularly in the historic city.
In the National Park, if the regulation provides for the usual things, namely to stay on the trails, to keep dogs on a leash, not to leave any waste behind, not to frighten wild animals and not to light fires, it also provides for a smoking ban. Be careful that the forest guards keep an eye on the grain and that the fines can be high.
