Mainz was founded by the Romans 2000 years ago. It is the capital of Land of Rhineland-Palatinate and its largest city with more than 200,000 inhabitants. In the city are theJohannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and the Roman Catholic Diocese. It is one of the three carnival bastions on the banks of the Rhine. During the summer there are also major festivals. - With a State Theater, several museums and small private theaters, Mainz is rich in cultural institutions and sights.

Understand

The Legions camp Mogontiacum was built in XIIIe century by the Roman commander Drusus on a hill (today: Kästrich). The mouth of the Main in the winding Rhine on the opposite bank was swampy and was drained by the Romans.

Mainz has a rich history: in the Middle Ages, it was the seat of one of the seven Kurfürsten and the chancellor of Holy Roman Empire ; it later became the fortress of the Germanic Confederation, then was occupied by the French and, under Napoleon, was the capital of a French department. During the liberation by German troops, the city was almost completely destroyed. In 1945, a bombardment by the British army destroyed 80 % city ; the town of Wiesbaden on the right bank was spared.

Separate neighborhoods

From July 25, 1945, the Rhine was the border between the French and American zones, therefore the districts of Amöneburg, Kastel and Kostheim were under the administration of Wiesbaden and even today the "AKK" suburbs are districts of Wiesbaden, the capital of Hesse. Thus the traveler crossing the bridge over the Rhine will find the sign "Mainz Kastel - Stadt Wiesbaden ».

Holidays

Mainz carnival

The „Määnzer Fassenacht” (Mainz carnival) has a political-literary character unlike the carnival in Cologne and Düsseldorf. Especially politicians and other personalities of official interest are “criticized”. The most famous session is Mainz bleibt Mainz, wie es singt und lacht which takes place every year in the Kurfürstliche Schloss and is televised by SWR or ZDF alternately. The carnival in the streets is not so important, most of the shows take place in the halls.

the Mainzer Fastnacht starts at11/11 to 11 h 11.

  • The Mayençaise associations organize numerous shows in the halls in the following weeks: Prunksitzungen, Gardetänze, Büttenreden etc.
  • At 1er January is the procession of Mainzer Garden (the carnival guards of Mainz)
  • The Thursday before Carnival (e.g. February 23, 2017) is the Women's Carnival (Altweiberfastnacht)
  • The youth procession begins on Saturday at 14 h 11
  • The guards parade is on Sunday
  • The Shrove Monday procession (Rosenmontagszug) is the highlight of the carnival (eg February 27, 2017). This procession consists of ~ 5,000 participants with 177 cars (wagons, carts) and a length of 5,5 km. It starts to 11 h north of the old town. - We expect more than 500,000 spectators.

To buy

The possibility of shopping is the same as in any other big city. The center is the Ludwigstrasse Between Schillerplatz and the cathedral (call “Lu”) which also marks the boundary between the city center and the old town. Another center is the Große Bleiche. Am Brand, direction town hall, is the clothing stores. The market (Wochenmarkt) takes place every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

A "luxury street" does not exist in Mainz. If you ask the question, a mayençais will answer you: « gugge se doch in Wiesbade » (patois: go see Wiesbaden).
