Trudner Horn Nature Park - Naturpark Trudner Horn

Nature reserves in South Tyrol.png

The Trudner Horn Nature Park(Italian: Parco Naturale Monte Corno) is a nature reserve in South-Tirol, it lies between the Adige Valley, the Fiemme Valley and the Cembra Valley in Trentino.

background

The nature park was founded in 1980 and expanded in 2000. Its area of 6,851 hectares is distributed among the municipalities 1 Altrei, 2 Montan , 3 Neumarkt, 4 Salurn and 5 Truden. Its lowest point is near the Salurner Klause at an altitude of 225 m, the highest point is the eponymous Trudner Horn, it is 1,781 m high. This makes the protected area around the Trudner Horn the only South Tyrolean nature park that remains below the alpine level at 2,000 m. Its altitude zones extend from the sub-Mediterranean flatlands over the hill country to the sub-alpine steps and thus enable a variety of flora and fauna that cannot be found in other South Tyrolean nature parks.

landscape

The geology of the nature park is determined by two different types of rock. On the one hand, there is the brown quartz porphyry, it is hard and impermeable to water. The overlying white dolomite limestone, on the other hand, is permeable to water. In the past, the fracture of a mountain floe raised the porphyry. This becomes visible northeast of the nature park, where the dolomite des 1 Weißhorns (2,317 m) next to the porphyry des 2 Schwarzhorns (2,439 m) is located. This also has consequences for the vegetation: the ice age has dug hollows in the porphyry surfaces, water collects in them and forms bogs, the dolomite surfaces, on the other hand, let the water through and karst, here you can find dry grass.

Distinctive elevations are:

  • 3 Trudner Horn, 1781 m
  • 4 Cislon (Cucul), 1563 m
  • 5 Königswiese, 1622 m
  • 6 Madruttberg, 1507 m
  • 7 vulture, 1084 m, on the edge of the Adige Valley. Together with the Fennberg on the other side of the river, it forms the Salurn hermitage.
