Kaltern on the wine route(Italian: Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino) is a market town in South-Tirol. The place is known for its mild, sunny climate and the Kalterer See, the warmest swimming lake in the Alps. The area around Kaltern is also called “Little Tuscany” because of its rolling hills in lush green, cypresses, olive trees and palm trees and is very well used for tourists. A mild climate and a charming landscape ensure that hotels are fully booked, especially in spring, summer and autumn. The wine of the Vernatsch grape, which is grown around the lake in Kaltern, is called Kalterer See Auslese and made the beautiful market town famous in many countries years ago. Today, special quality wines from the cellars in Kaltern are also making a name for themselves.

getting there

By plane

By train

Arrival by train is only possible as far as Bolzano (either from Brenner, Vinschgau or Verona). However, a good connection to the bus network to Kaltern is guaranteed, with buses running about every half hour.

By bus

Buses run regularly to Bolzano, the Seebus runs repeatedly through the districts of Kalterns and to Lake Caldaro in summer. There is a discussion about building an S-Bahn to Bolzano in order to reduce the very heavy commuter traffic to the state capital (as of June 2007).

In the street

Kaltern is 10 km southwest of Bolzano and can be reached either via the A22 Brenner motorway or the more scenic Reschenpass.

activities

Lake Kaltern

Lake Kaltern is located south of the village at approx. 216 m and is the warmest swimming lake in the Alps. Its water temperature in summer is up to 28 degrees, so the bathing season can usually begin as early as mid-May. There are no public bathing beaches, three seaside resorts are open from May to October. Numerous hotels and pensions are located directly on the lake and have private beaches. In winter the lake usually freezes and you can skate on it very well. Lake Kaltern is surrounded by vineyards.

hike

Southeast view from Penegal: Kaltern and Lake Kaltern

There are numerous hiking trails around Kaltern, some through the vineyards with a beautiful view of Kaltern and Lake Kaltern.

An easy hike leads from the 2 Kreithof car park on the ridge of the Mitterberg 8 Leuchtenburg .

Mendel Pass

A trip with the Panoramabahn to the Mendel (price for a return ticket: approx. € 10) is also worthwhile: on nice days you have a wide view of the Überetsch from the mountain station at 1354 m. The Mendelbahn needs a travel time of 12 minutes for the difference in altitude of 854 m.

Alternatively, you can take the pass road, which winds up the steep mountain in countless tight bends and is particularly popular with motorcyclists (but also with cyclists).

If you feel like it, you can take an easy (mountain) hike to the north from here on the 1737 m high panoramic mountain 1 Penegal Companies. The walking time from the mountain station is 1 to 1 1/2 hours, depending on the walking pace, simply on hiking trails (marking 500; colors red / white). If you feel like it, you can make a detour to the small9 Penegal do.

The Penegal is also accessed from the Mendel Pass by a narrow, toll-free mountain road. There is one up on the mountain Hotel with gastronomy, an animal enclosure and of course a lookout point with a panoramic view. The view extends over Bolzano and the Kalterer See far into the Dolomites into it.

In a southerly direction you can also reach 500 different managed huts on the way - for example, the Enzianhütte after approx. 20 minutes and the Halbweghütte after approx. 1 hour. A chair lift also leads to the Halbweghütte, the valley station of which can be reached from the Mendel Pass by car in 5 minutes and on foot in about 30 minutes. From the Halbweghütte you can hike on to the Überetscher Hütte and from there to Mont Roen, the highest mountain on the Mendelkamm.
