Neuenkirchen (Steinfurt district) is a city in Münsterland.

background

The first documentary mention goes back to the year 1247, when the bishop Ludolf allowed the local farmers to build a new church. The present name Neuenkirchen comes from this gesture. Only the Anabaptists moved to the village in the 16th century. A few years later, Spanish soldiers plundered the city twice. The following Thirty Years' War also hit the place, as well as the entire Münsterland, severely. The economic turnaround came with the Max-Clemens Canal and the terminal port near Neuenkirchen. The boom was short-lived. But soon after, Neuenkirchen managed to get started in textile production.

Tourist Attractions

  • 1 Parish Church of St. AnnaThe first church was built in this place in 1247, which gave the place its name. This church was at least replaced by a newer church until construction of the current landmark began in 1896. Architecturally, the church is in front of the cathedral And afterwards or to the monastery church of the Maria Laach Abbey ajar.
  • 2 Offlumer See, quartz sand was mined here until the early 21st century. Since 2004 the lake has been expanded into a recreation area. A beach promenade with silos converted into viewing platforms is just as attractive as a bathing beach with a beach café.
  • 3 Villa Hecking - The approximately 200-year-old villa with park now functions as a community center and cultural center
  • 4 Home house, regional handicrafts and country life over time.
  • 5 Clemenshafen - There is not much to see of the former harbor and Max-Clemens-Canal. Only the name of the restaurant reminds of it. From here, however, you can make good bike excursions along the Max-Clemens-Canal all the way to Muenster start. From Emsdetten you can then clearly recognize this.
