Circumscribed is the Lower Bavarian hill country in the north of Gäuboden with the Danube and from Bavarian forest, South of Upper Bavaria, to the east from the lower Inn to Austria and to the west of the Franconian Alb.

The region includes in the natural definition of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation also smaller areas in the north Upper Bavaria, in the south of the Upper Palatinate and also the Hallertau.
