The region Eastern Europe starts on the eastern borders Finland, Poland, the Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia as North Macedonia and ends at the Urals and the Caucasus. In terms of cultural history, the countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania do not belong to Eastern Europe, as they both have non-Slavic roots and were for a long time in the German or Scandinavian cultural sphere.

With the exception of Romania and Bulgaria, the countries of Eastern Europe share a common history as part of the former Soviet Union. Only the three Baltic states Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and since January 1, 2007 Bulgaria and Romania are members of the European Union.
