Phayao(Thai: พะเยา) is the capital of the eponymous province in Northern Thailand.

By plane

The closest airports are Chiang Rai (CEI; approx. 100 km north) and Lampang (LPT; 135 km south).

By train

The nearest train station on the northern line of the Thai Railways is Nakhon Lampang (140 km south).

By bus

The most important means of public transport are long-distance buses. There are direct buses from Bangkoks northern Mo Chit bus station, they take around 10 hours and usually drive overnight. The buses from Bangkok to Chiang Rai also often stop in Phayao and can be used.

Within the northern region, the Phayao bus station is mostly used by society Greenbus served. In the street

Phayao can be reached by private transport via the well-developed national road 1 (Asian Highway 2), which leads from Chiang Rai in one direction, from Bangkok via Nakhon Sawan and Lampang in the other direction.

From the direction of Chiang Mai you can either take the detour via the large main roads No. 11 and 1 via Lampang or directly via the smaller and rather curvy roads No. 118 and 120, although you do not get ahead that fast because of the mountain range to be overcome. Nan may not seem far from Phayao on the map, but is only connected to Phayao by small and extremely winding mountain roads.

From Chiang Rai it takes about 1½ hours by car, from Lampang two hours, from Chiang Mai a good 2½ hours, from Nan 2:45 hours, from Bangkok over nine hours pure driving time.

Statue Phra Chao Ton Luang in Wat Si Khom Kham
  • Wat S (r) i Khom Kham (วัด ศรี โคม คำ). The Buddhist temple stands directly on Lake Phayao. It includes a Buddha statue believed to be over 500 years old, which was made by the locals Phra Chao Ton Luang (พระเจ้า ตน หลวง) is called. It is 17 meters high, making it the largest Buddha statue in Lan Na. It was built from bricks and covered with gold, and legend has it that it took 33 years to complete. The statue once stood in the open air by the lake, the Wihan, in which it is housed today, is from more recent times. Every year in May a big temple festival is celebrated here.

  • Statue of King Ngam Müang. In the 13th century Phayao was an independent kingdom; its founder, Ngam Müang, signed the "Three Kings Treaty" with his "brothers" Mangrai von Lan Na (Chiang Mai) and Ramkhamhaeng by Sukhothai, a kind of founding myth of today's Thailand. In Phayao, Ngam Müang is venerated, so to speak, as a local saint; wreaths of flowers and candles are offered to his statue to wish luck, success, love or wealth.
