When to go

Currently Roccamandolfi no longer knows the harsh cold that caused exceptional snowfalls until a few decades ago, on the contrary the summer climate now reaches and exceeds 35 ° C every year. However, the climate is dry and the air remains cooler than in neighboring countries even in the height of summer.

Background

The toponym Roccamandolfi is of Lombard origin, or Rocca di Maginulfo, belonging to the royal family, which held the office of Castaldo d 'Aquino at the end of the 9th century. Due to linguistic corruption, the toponym later became Roccamandolfi. Under the Lombards the place was part of the County of Bojano; with the Normans the village was aggregated to the County of Molise. Castellano di Roccamandolfi was Count Carlo Pannone (who later became Pandone).

The Roccamandolfi castle underwent various assaults and sieges, until the Rocca Maginulfi was destroyed by the count of Acerra, Tommaso I d'Aquino, at the behest of the king. The adjoining village was rebuilt further downstream (in the “Casale” locality), where today's Roccamandolfi stands. The castle and the village lost all strategic importance: thus began the sale of the fiefdom by the various nobles of the city of Naples. The following in possession, among others: Roccafoglia, Gaetani, Cennamo, Artois, Perez, Rizzo, Pignatelli; the latter rose to the title of Dukes of Roccamandolfi, retaining the fiefdom until 1806, the year of the abolition of feudalism.

In 1780 the Duchess Anna Pignatelli obtained the body of San Liberato Martire from Pope Pius VI to be venerated in the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore (21 March 1780). Roccamandolfi is famous for having been, among the Molisans, the homeland of many men dedicated to post-unification banditry. What is less known is that in Roccamandolfi a type of banditry was born in 1799, linked to politics rather than exasperation and revolt. In recent times the country experienced a strong emigration, like many centers in the south.

What see

  • Sanctuary of San Liberato. In Roccamandolfi there is a sanctuary that has kept the relics of San Liberato Martire for over 200 years. He is a very revered saint throughout the country and in neighboring countries, and many pilgrims, during the days dedicated to him, go to the place as a sign of devotion.
  • Church of the Holy Martyrs. Simply called "Dei Santi", it preserves many statues, including those of San Sebastiano, Sant'Anna and San Donato. A cattle fair and a big party were dedicated to the latter, since ancient times considered the protector of epileptics (epilepsy in Molise dialect is called "the sickness of San Donato"). Today behind the altar of the small church there still remains the instrument with which the inhabitants of the town and neighboring villages came to weigh their children, offering, for their blessing by the Saint, a quantity of wheat equal to the weight of the child.
  • Church of S. Giacomo Maggiore. The Sanctuary of San Liberato is a small temple obtained in the apse of the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore, but currently the entire sacred building is considered both "Sanctuary of San Liberato" and "Church of San Giacomo Maggiore", in which some relics of the Holy Apostle.
  • Longobard-Norman Castle. On the top of the hill on which the town is located there are the ruins of a Norman castle built on a pre-existing Lombard fortress. The castle has also been the subject of in-depth studies in recent times (2006)
  • Cross Viaria. At the entrance to the village, in what was once the only entrance to the village, there is an interesting road cross; together with the devotion to St. James the Major it suggests that Roccamandolfi was one of the destinations or stops for pilgrims who went to Santiago de Compostela. It was probably built in the 14th century at the behest of the Angevin kings at the end of a successful "hunt" for a group of heretics barricaded in the ruins of the Norman castle.
  • Trainara Park. In the lower area of the inhabited center, it consists of a small square in front of an ancient fountain from which the Matese water gushes, a floor mosaic representing the municipal coat of arms and a concrete canopy indicating the place where it is possible to collect water. In front of the park, testifying to the abundance of water in the area, there is the Public Washhouse (Fontana Grotte, in roccolano La Rotte), an 18th century drinking trough which bears a plaque on the side, now almost illegible, in which the mayor is indicated. who wanted the work and the date of construction of the same, and another well-preserved fountain.
  • Tibetan bridge. A metal bridge suspended in the air has been installed near the Castle for a number of years mainly for tourism purposes.
  • Bridge of San Bernardino and Macchialonga. Upon entering the town, after the "Macchie" locality, you come across the San Bernardino bridge, the main access to the town and home to another large fountain. Not far from this source, you can go up to the first place where according to tradition the body of San Liberato was placed on the ground and where the sacred remains became so heavy that they could no longer be transported to Naples.

Events and parties

  • Feast of San Liberato. The remains of the Martyr present in the sanctuary are venerated. It takes place on the first Sunday of June. Once upon a time, pilgrims from all over the Campania and Molise Matese visited the saint for the fifteen days before and fifteen days after that date. Today they go on pilgrimage to Roccamandolfi only from the previous Friday according to a pre-established calendar. The festivities include fireworks.
  • Shepherd's day (in Campitello di Rocca). Simple icon time.svgTowards the middle of July. Agro-pastoral event with tasting of typical products.
